Kansas and Kerry Livgren projects
Everything by Proto-Kaw. The 1971-1973 archival recordings are unbelievably awesome. Kansas were NOT latecomers to 70s prog as is commonly held. They were no different than the Italian bands influenced by English prog and adding their own country flair.
Art of the State by AD is as good as any 80’s proggy AOR out there. Great Christian lyrics.
Somewhere to Elsewhere/Collector’s Sedition is just about the best “70s Kansas” next to the real thing.
What do you all think? What are your favorite 70’s Kansas albums? How about post 70’s Livgren project?

As far as Kansas goes, I like "Leftoverture" the best overall, but "Point Of No Return" would be a close second and my favorite song from them is actually "Play The Game Tonight."
I saw Kansas on August 28, 1979. Was surprised at how heavy they sounded live, they were more metal-sounding than any other classic rock band I saw back then, and way heavier than on the albums. This was the set list:
Setlist:
On the Other Side
People of the South Wind
Away From You
Point of Know Return
Closet Chronicles
The Wall
Dust in the Wind
Opus Insert
Angels Have Fallen
Reason to Be
Stay Out of Trouble
The Spider
Portrait (He Knew)
A Glimpse of Home
Encores:
How My Soul Cries Out for You
Carry On Wayward Son

That’s hilarious. I’m not terribly surprised he doesn’t like thrash. He’s wrong but the quaint grampa kinda wrong.

I told him to play "Imperiled Eyes" on guitar and get back to me when he's done.

Nice! Yeah, Kansas is way heavier and proggiwr than they’re often credited. Mangum Opus, anyone? Those riffs sizzle. Point of Know Return is not as heavy overall, but the violin playing is probably the best in their career.

Kerry's forgotten more about guitar playing than some others will ever know.Friday13th wrote:Temple of Blood wrote:Friday13th wrote:Temple of Blood wrote:I had an argument with Kerry online many years ago when he said thrash metal didn't take talent.

Are you saying that I shouldn't have said anything?
Your comment sounds more like a personal slight than anything else.

Exactly.
I like Kerry and Kansas a lot, but he's not Jesus Christ. It is possible for him to be wrong about something on occasion.
He didn't get upset like Balemaster when I replied to him. He walked back his comments. It was clear to me that he really hadn't done much of a deep dive in the genre.
I don't think anyone is discounting KL's talent. Kansas and thrash metal are apples and oranges.
