How to get the best thrash tone with just amp distortion

What are the ideal settings if you are trying to get a good thrash tone via amplifier distortion?

So the stereotypical thrash tone is all gain, no mids. I do not recommend that. If you take out the mids you have to make up for it with a tube screamer style overdrive (which pushes the mids). I like to push the treble(highs) and pull the mids and bass(lows) back. Just experiment. I don't have a high gain amp, I use a distortion pedal.

Yes, the traditional thrash sound is obtained by scooping out the mids.  
I agree with CTR though, that sound leaves much to be desired unless it is augmented by other effects or signal paths.
