I wonder if you might like Leander Kills? I was given a [signed*] CD of their second album and while it's not something I listen to often, it's pretty good for what it is. The vocalist is very talented and often compared to SOAD. The lyrics are all in Hungarian but to my knowledge they're clean. They blend Hungarian folk with nu-metal and are very popular in Hungary.

I'll have to check it out when I'm on a different device, as I'm on my school laptop which has the dumb YouTube restriction filter on which kind of sucks and blocked that video, probably due to seeing the word "kills".Kerrick wrote:StevenCressler wrote:I think I just like taking the opportunity to name a great nu-metal album considering that's the main thing they're known as. Endgame is overrated. Super Collider is underrated.

I would agree. They did also did a very good cover of "Planet Caravan" by BS.seth wrote:

I would say that Saxon has been more consistent over the years.Pethead wrote:Judas Priest has written some of the greatest metal songs ever. But on the whole I’ll take Saxon over them.
Put down the pitchforks.
But the song-writing depth of the early-to-mid Priest material was stellar, and helped to set the template for all heavy metal to follow.

I've only heard "Chop Suey" from them.StevenCressler wrote:Toxicity by SOAD is the best nu-metal album I know and is better most thrash out there
But now I'm curious and will give the album a listen on one of the streaming sites.

I really like Hold Your Fire. Power Windows is also good. Most of the albums after that are spotty.Superjuice wrote:Grace Under Pressure is just as good a Rush album as A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres.....However, it is downhill after that album with highlights here and there.
Roll The Bones and Counterparts have some good songs. And the 2013 remaster of Presto helps tremendously, now I realize it has some good songs too...!.

Re: Secular hot takes
There are great songs on all of those records like Mystic Rhythms, Show Don't Tell, Animate, Force Ten, but a little too much ho-hum in their run-time as compared to the past. Rush also ceased being 'Rush' since I rarely got a rush listening to them after '84. I saw them on the Roll the Bones tour and thought was a pretty good album, but nowhere near their prime.Constantine wrote:I really like Hold Your Fire. Power Windows is also good. My least favorite from them—besides the debut—is probably Test for Echo, although Driven is a killer song.

And don’t give me that “THEY KEPT METAL ALIVE IN THE 90S!!!!” stuff. Metal never died. Metal doesn’t need to be mainstream to be great.
Glad you like Cemetery Gates… but I couldn’t disagree more about the other comment. Power Metal, CFH and VDOP have lots of excellent songs. I find it hard to believe some would think the majority of Dimebag’s riffs are not infectious. He was a master of groove.
I can already see where you’re coming from… so if you think Cemetery Gates is good, then you should also enjoy The Sleep and We’ll Meet Again. They are in the same melodic style. And they both have great solos!

Pethead wrote:I like Dime. Phil ruins most latter-day Pantera for me. Monotonous shouting: “mommy never hugged me, I hate black people, women are worthless except for sex, I’m so tough, drugs are cool. Also, I’M TOUGH, OK?!”
Black Metal is monotonous screaming/screeching, but that is no problem for their fans. I hear Phil crooning/singing on every Pantera album. Even TGSTK had Suicide Note (part 1). Far Beyond Driven had the Planet Caravan cover.
I never seen or heard him say he hates black people. He grew up in New Orleans which is about 70% black. He’s good friends with Doug Pinnick who is black and gay. The Nazi salute fiasco was a drunken mistake. From what I understand, he was reacting to some hecklers in the audience. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know for sure… but I highly doubt a white racist would be okay let alone friends with a gay black man.
Is Sepultura’s vocals monotonous? Much more than Phil (Max literally just shouts). But I like it! Same with Tom Araya.
Phil has done a lot of foolish stuff. I guess he got a thrill from getting reactions from those he probably perceived as snowflakes. He’s doing a lot better now that he has been off the drugs and had his back surgery.

Monotonous vocals are not the only issue. The dumb, pseudo-tough guy lyrics annoy the mess out of me. It also frustrates me because he had an EPIC voice that he blew.
Again, I think Dime contributes enough awesome riffs and solos to make Pantera salvageable. But then Phil opens his mouth.

Racism is terrible, but it’s not the only sin. We all have done stuff that deserves hell. People are fallen sinners. Let’s not play the “your sin is worse than mine” game. I don’t believe Phil is a racist. His friends like Pepper Keenan and many others vouch for him. He is guilty of being drunk/drugged and foolish for a reaction!
J agree that he wasted his talented voice after CFH, but I do like his shouting style on VDOP. Also the lyrics to “Rise” is anti-racism!
