Melodic Thrash
I’m thinking melodic thrash usually means melodic vocals, but if you have an album that brings a lot of melody in another way, that’s fine too.
I’ll start.
Tourniquet: Several could fit, but I especially think of Stop the Bleeding and Where Moth and Rust Destroy
Deliverance: first 2
Thresher: Here I Am
Mosh-Pit Justice: all
Temple of Blood: both
Antithesis: first 2
Boarders: both
Mad Dragzter: Master of Space and Time
Step Cousin: The Evolution Religion
Teramaze: Doxology
Red Lamb: s/t
Some of these are debatable, but there you go.
Re: Melodic Thrash
Deliverance was the king of that style.

I’m just saying what I always heard. I don’t care enough about nitpicky genre definitions. I won’t lose any sleep over it. LOL
But if you try to tell me Disturbed, Nickelback or Linkin Park are real metal, I’m drawing the line!

Pethead wrote:For me, while the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, I think of speed metal as having more melodic riffs, while thrash is more chromatic in its riffing.
Also thrash is more influenced by early punk and hardcore (less slick). It also tends to be played a bit looser like Motörhead. But every band has different standards. Kill ‘Em All by Metallica and Megadeth’s Killing is My Business have a big punk influence mixed with NWOBHM.
Speed Metal seemed to mix Maiden, Priest and Queensryche vocals with fast rhythm playing.

Lots of gruff shouting and barking for vocals. A little bit of crudely attempted singing. Flotsam and Anthrax were more “speed metal”.

Thrash is more "street" (owing more to hardcore punk) and it's riffing and style is generally more "brutal" or pummeling in nature. More abrasive than speed metal.
Just my two cents.

What would we call Bride's first album? Have always thought if anything could be classified as speed metal it might be that album, being that it's at times slightly faster than normal NWOBHM, and melodic lead work and guitar harmony often moves in warp speed, it's got a raw production but not it's quite thrash, therefore I figure it's gotta be speed metal...

WildWorld wrote:There are bands who are Speed Metal but arent thrash (ie, Racer X, Raven, Liege Lord, arguably Impelliterri would fit that as well).
I’m a big Racer X fan and I never once viewed them as speed metal. Fast solos are not what speed metal is. Racer X is basically Judas Priest mixed with over the top neoclassical shredding.

But most of it is done without gutteral vocals... that's why I get turned of most of it. I like the music but it is ruined by either a high pitched nasally cat sound or clean high type vocals... there's more of that than say Sepultura or seventh angel type vox and the like in the genre of thrash... wouldn't you agree?alldatndensum wrote:I don'tind the music of thrash. I would love to hear someone actually do something thrash with less gutteral vocals. I might like more thrash that way.

Kerrick wrote:TOB, would you consider Kenn Nardi's solo stuff to be melodic thrash?
Some of it would. I would need to listen to those albums again to say overall if I agree with that label. I don't remember more than a few songs being very thrashy. Not as thrashy as Anacrusis IMHO.
