Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes
This is one of the greatest albums of its era. Its criminally overlooked. It beats out most of Dokken’s classic albums. (I still give the nod to Back for the Attack since that, IMHO, is simply the best metal album ever made.) Don’s songwriting was in top form here. John Norum was inspired on this. His playing here puts his work in Europe to shame.
The guitar solo on Crash ‘N’ Burn is one of my favorites ever by anyone.

I won't say this was better than classic Dokken, but it was at least equal to it!

Absolutely fantastic album and I loved John Norum's work on it.

I'd put Tooth and Nail and BFTA above this out of the classic Dokken library but this is a great album.

Re: Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes
I remember that this Don Dokken was very good but didn't seem to go anywhere except the cut-out bins. Geffen did not put much marketing behind it. Geffen had so many major artists at that point that they barely promoted their few heavy metal artists (Galactic Cowboys, Blue Murder, Phantom Blue, EZO, Death Angel, Warrior Soul, Black N' Blue, Jackyl, etc.).
For me Tooth & Nail is #1 and I don't really have a #2 because my other favorite songs are all between "Breakin' The Chains" and "ULAK" as well as "BFTA" and "Erase The Slate."
Has anyone heard 2012's "Broken Bones"? It was a surprisingly good record.
Don is not in top form but the songs are good and Jon Levin's guitar work is absolutely spectacular.
I also thought George Lynch's 'Sacred Groove" was brilliant - only song(s) on there I hated was "The Beast Part 1 & 2" with Mandy Lion because the lyrics are just gross. Skip track(s).

Broken Bones was decent but Don's voice is so shot it kind of puts a damper on it. I did really like Lightning Strikes Again.

Re: Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes
I certainly dug parts of Broken Bones and even more of Lightning Strikes Again. But Don's voice seemed to be only good for ballads by the time Broken Bones hit. Levin was fantastic on both albums.
