What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
I was just listening to this album after several and several years.
I always thought this to be the worse album in Rex Carroll years.
SOme months ago, I saw a interview with michael feigan and he told that, at that time, Rex was listening a lot to MR. Big and he kind of wanted to sounbd like them in this album.
I totally see the influence here, at that listen. Of course, the bass player is not that good, and I still think Scott's voice doesn't work well on ballads.

I find it fairly weak, too poppy. Couple good songs but not one I listen to.

It has too many ballads and I'm not a fan of Whitecross ballads. Exceptions: I do like In America and My Love.

It was a little too full of ballads. They were trying to get more airplay on CCM radio, but Whitecross didn't exactly fit that mold when they did ballads. Scott's voice just didn't fit what they wrote. Other than that, though, there are some killer songs on the album.
Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
Very weak. It's like they were trying to be something they're not. The groove on the title track is really good but the vocals falls short. It's like Scott was trying to be a blues singer.
Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
Not a fan. I bought it when I saw them on that tour and of course they only play the good songs off an album live. I keep it because it is autographed.

Out of all of WC albums, this one gets the least amount of playtime from me, mainly because as mentioned before their being way too many ballads

It had some great tracks. From what I remember the mix was tinny sounding.

It starts off promising but goes downhill quick

I like it better now than I did back then. However I need to listen to it again. It has been a while.

It has a few really good tracks...I love the title track...but as most have said, it's too ballad heavy and I have never been a fan of 90% of WC ballads. I like a couple, but not most.

Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
The best White Cross albums are the first 3. The next 3: In the Kingdom, High Gear and Unveiled are not as good but has their moments. Equilribum (or however you spell that word) is almost terrible, but not quite. Flytrap is a little better than the Equilribum but not much. Whitecross went from being a band to a Scott Wenzel project in the mid 90's after Rex left.
I liked High Gear and In the Kingdom. I'd give them a 6.5, maybe a 7 out of 10, but nothing beats their first 3 albums.

Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
I like High Gear. When it rocks, for the most part, it’s pretty solid. And at least one of the ballads work. I really like “My Love”. “In America” sounded WAY too much like “In the Kingdom” and wasn’t nearly as good.
On the positive side, we have the title track, “Dancin in Heaven” - which has a killer riff, “Without Your Love” - which sounds like a throwback to their heavier earlier albums. And the last song “Long Road To Walk” is really good, at least musically. The lyrics are a bit cheesy.
All in all, a solid record. It will never be a favorite but I can enjoy it too.

Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
We all have similar opinions, so far.
The most interesting thing is that they were trying to be different from what they have been.
I could have enjoyed High gear and In the Kingdom much more, but they really forced those lots of ballads. In the High Gear album, they shouldn't try to sound like Mr. Big, because they were much better as whitecross.
However, nowadays I think that this album deserves an ocasional listen. Better than In the Kingdom, that was such a disappointing album.
After Rex's departure, I only care about Flytrap and One More Encore(best of...)

Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
I still like High Gear.
It was the only time that I saw White Cross, on that tour, and my wife enjoyed herself very much. That was a BIG plus for me. My wife was actually enjoying some of my music.
We left during the encore cause she was way over-due with our first child and we wanted to beat the traffic out of the parking lot.
I know they are Cheesy and we could take shots at them all day long, but I have a very soft spot for them, and their music still resonates with me. So, High Gear? Yes, Please.

Cheesy? Yes. They wrote some amazing songs (some of my favorites are on In the Kingdom) and some terrible songs (the worst are also on In the Kingdom). They wrote more good than bad so it's just a matter of how much cheese you can take before it stops you up.

If you took the heavy songs from In the Kingdom and High Gear you would have a decent record. You could add "My Love" as the ballad. That song is pretty good

Re: What you guys think of Whitecross - High Gear?
On In the Kingdom the song "holy war" could've been a really good song but that rap parts ruin it for me. Granted i don't like rap but i don't mind rap if it sung with heavy guitars (ie XL and DBD)
I'm not a rap expert but the rap itself it is not good and the lyrics are terrible. I wish they made a rap free version and had both on the disc. It's almost ruins the song. I may try to edit the rap out myself.

I agree with everything force perspective said. I would add "In the Kingdom" as a second ballad along with "My Love."
I also don't like "Holy War" and agree 100% on a hypothetical rap-free mix. That's one of the "terrible" songs I was referring to in my last post.

I think around this time (In the Kingdom and High Gear) they were going for a more commercial sound (you could add Triumphant Return as well, but they still had some older sounding stuff on that one). They had ditched the more street-level sound and the sleaze-metal type vocals (ok fine, Ratt-Style vocals) so they could fit in more with the more commercial acts at the time like Guardian and Tamplin.

To this day, I still try to understando why every american rock band has to do a rap at least once in it's lifetime.
I get that rap is really popular in the US, but still, it is the opposite style.

You Must be trippin homes, It ain't no thing but a chicken wing!!!force perspective wrote:On In the Kingdom the song "holy war" could've been a really good song but that rap parts ruin it for me. "Come on, Gabe, stop trippin'
My god is gaining while yours is steady slippin'
Look around, the church is dying
Step off punk, there ain't no point in trying
To make your case, I'm in your face
With the news that your crew's 'bout to be disgraced
We're bold, cold, 'bout to put you on hold
Like a twenty dollar suit we're gonna watch you fold
Hold on, homes, get a grip
I'm droppin' science on the Revelation tip
It's a fairy tale, a bedtime story
There won't be no Armegeddon cuz we're gonna steal the glory
From your so-called King and the posse He brings
Won't be no thing but a chicken wing
We're living large, and takin' charge
Gonna park you like a car in your momma's garage
