Open Heart Surgery
Hey guys,
Next week I'm going in for open heart surgery. I have a condition where the septum between my heart ventricles (remember this from elementary school science class?) is 3x larger than it should be. I've had the condition for several years but it's gotten WAY worse in the last year to the point it's affecting my quality of life. What a healthy person feels after a mile run I feel after a flight of stairs. Anyway, next week I'm going to University of Michigan hospital to have the thickened part shaved down to size.
Please pray that it works and I get my life back. Please pray against complications. If this works with no complications, I'm all better.
Thanks.

Praying. UofM has a FANTASTIC cardiac unit. I have a close friend who was born in the mid '70s with "transposition of the great vessels", wasn't supposed to see 20. He went to UofM for care until his mid 30's, eventually moved far enough away the trip was not feasible. He finally needed a transplant just before turning 40, and is going strong.

Re: Open Heart Surgery
Thanks guys! I can't say I'm "looking forward to it" but like I said, this solves the problem. This isn't terminal if I have the surgery. This isn't even a chronic illness if I have the surgery. If I'd done nothing, sure, I would probably be dead a few years from now. But if this works, I'm fixed.
Yes, U of M hospital is amazing, not just for cardiology. They saved the life of a co-worker's baby who had cancer.

So...
It has been postponed. Apparently another urgent case came up and I've been bumped. I'm impatiently awaiting a phone call from them (supposedly sometime today) for a new date.

Re: Open Heart Surgery
I called them before close of business today and the secretary took my phone number and said they'd call me back.
Nothing.
Yeah, I had to re-arrange my whole life for this. I've had this date for two months, it's not like they scheduled it last week and something came up. I had to work out being off work, childcare, other appointments, everything. Now I get to do it all again. I may need lab work done again since that was only good for a month (it was done Jan. 9). NOW you guys know how to really pray. Thanks for the support.

Re: Open Heart Surgery
Yes, March 7. I spent about 24 hours in the ICU then was transferred to the general hospital (which at U of M is all one giant building). I was released yesterday (the 11th) and am recovering at home. I'm really tired and sore. I'm not a back sleeper but I'm forced to sleep on by back until the sternum heals. With extra fluid retention this is extra uncomfortable.
I'm still glad to be home and praying for a speedy recovery.

I've had a broken sternum before. I'm told there is almost never and problem with it healing, which is good, but it sure does hurt. Will be praying for your recovery.

Re: Open Heart Surgery
I'll definetly be praying. I pray also that God will place His hand of protection over you. Jesus still has a plan for you, and that means nothing will stop you until God says otherwise. Your work that He has for you is not over.

Re: Open Heart Surgery
One month post-myectomy. I can tell the surgery worked and I can tell I'm VERY SLOWLY getting better from the surgery. That groggy feeling a normal person has in the morning before the first cup of coffee is how I feel much of the day. Vivid dreams nightly too. I think my most likely cause of death right now is a sneeze.

Post op appointment today. I passed with "flying colors."
I guess it's back to work now.
