Stryper=Power Metal? Empty Stryper=Power Metal?

Post by WildWorld Thu Jan 12, 2017 12:18 am

I was watching a fan retrospective of Stryper's career (I cant link to it due to profanity) and the video maker claimed that Stryper were actually a power metal band. Do you agree? I can definitely hear some of those chugga-chugga type rhythms in their early stuff (think Loud N Clear and The Rock That Makes Me Roll) and Fallen sounds a lot like US Power Metal (think Metal Church or Vicious Rumors).

When I (as a European) think what is power metal, I´m always thinking of bands like Stratovarius, early Sonata Arctica, Narnia, Reinxeed, Theocracy, Edguy and so on. In my mind I'd say Stryper is more melodic metal rather than power metal. Some of their stuff do sound power metal to me, but there´s just not that many that kind of songs in their catalogue.

Short answer: no.
Long answer: nooooooooooooooooooooooo.

The thought isn't too out there by the way; I own only two Stryper albums (NMHTP and Fallen), and I'd say they're heavy metal. When a band plays heavy metal and throws in a significant amount of melody, some people tend to call them power metal; Hammerfall suffers way more from that (although HF's first two albums contributed to that too).

I would love to see the source to get a sense where the person is coming from (and just for curiosity), but remember that our modern sense of power metal is different from the early/mid 80s.  It was basically non-doomy metal with dramatic vocals.  I've heard bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, Manowar, and Jag Panzer all referred to as power metal.  I think in that sense, Stryper (and a lot of the early work of a lot of those L.A. glam bands) fits.  The actual glam doesn't really come around until these bands started consciously going after radio/MTV play.

Right...and...

It is a difference of time and space. Very Happy

A difference between the 80ies and now and Europe and the US.

Some may remember that even bands like Deep Purple were once called Metal.

Bands like Maiden and Priest founded the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

In Germany we once called Stryper a Glam or Melodic Metal band.

Bands like Helloween or Gamma Ray were called Power Metal.
Because they were much faster and have had more shredding powerriffs and beats.

Original American power metal was exemplified in bands like Metal Church and Vicious Rumors. Heavy and fast  with hints of NWOBHM and thrash. European PM is cleaner, less thrashy. Stryper mixes glam with melodic metal and lately some European Power metal. Of course all this is only opinion but i'm right.  Razz

They have some songs that are USPM.  Others are more "melodic metal", "pop metal", or "hard rock".

But they don't fit into today's Euro Flower Metal scene.

Sweet definitely has the chops for a power metal singer but calling Stryper power metal is like calling Hillsong thrash metal.

No it's not.

"The Way", "The Reign", "Soldiers under Command", and "More than a Man" could easily qualify as US Power Metal.

Name one Hillsong tune that could qualify as thrash metal.

People these days think all this European flower metal is "power metal".  It's hardly even metal, and certainly not powerful.
