HB quits

Post by Stand against the wind on Sat Dec 10, 2016 8:18 pm

According to their Facebook, they had their farewell concert yesterday in Ennepetal.

One great christian metal act quitting. No good.

I hated to hear they were calling it a day, but I do understand that sometimes other priorities get in the way of making music.

That's sad, but it has been pretty quiet for a long time, so it doesn't really surprise me. It's a bummer they never released Pääkallonpaikka in english. It´s a great album.

This is depressing, though hardly surprising.  They haven't done anything except for the last few years except for the odd concert and the Christmas single in 2014.

It's a real shame.  They were a really talented and EXTREMELY underrated band.  The only band I can think of who managed to do a better job blending symphonic metal and pop is Delain.  Johanna has a lovely and distinctive voice, and a pretty good range to boot.  If they had been a secular band, I think they would have been quite successful commercially.

On a personal note, a few of their songs really spoke to me, and I discovered them at time in my life when I really needed those messages.  For that they will always have my gratitude.

Pääkallonpaikka is absolutely fantastic.  It's Hb at their peak, and without a doubt one of my all-time favorite albums - Christian or secular.  I have mixed feelings about it never getting an Enlgish release though.  On one hand, a lot of people never gave it a chance because it was only in Finnish, and that's a pity.  On the other hand, the one song they did do in English - The Evil Song - turned out ..... not so well.  So I was kind of apprehensive about an English version.

I guess the best I can hope for now is that Johanna ends up singing in another band.  Sad

Not really.  If I cannot understand the vocals, I wouldn't be worshipping with them or even playing the release.  It would have been a waste of my time and money to buy an album that I'd never play because I cannot understand the lyrics at all.  That isn't a shame--that is just the nature of the music industry whether it be Christian or secular.

HB was one of my favorite bands...super disappointing! Not that it was completely unexpected though. Once Johanna became a mother I think the writing was on the wall.

Never heard of them.  HB was their full name?  Not really any chance of going anywhere with a name like that....

Personally I always preferred the Finnish versions over the English ones. It sounds so much better when they are singing in their native language rather than trying to force them into English. It flows much better on the originals. And who doesn't like to hear tongue rolls in metal?

The quitting doesn't surprise me though. Johanna left for a bit and then came back shortly before this announcement. Assuming she left to move on to whatever else God was calling her to, sometimes its hard to let go and move on to the next stage of your life, and I assume this is her letting go and moving on.

I can see where you're coming from.  Personally, I can enjoy music even if I can't understand the words, but I know not everyone can.  As for "worshiping with them," I've never thought of this sort of music in that way, but each to their own.

I'll generally agree with you on this one, though I love the English vocals too on every album except the Battle of God.  I love the sound of Finnish to begin with though.  Smile

The one exception is Enne / Frozen Inside.  Maybe it's because the vocal style on Enne was different from their previous material and Frozen Inside was released three years later, but Johanna sounds more confident on the latter.

Yes, just "HB."  As far as I know it doesn't stand for anything (I never bothered to Google it).

They made I think 4 albums in Finnish, 3 of which were re-recorded with English vocals.  That's as good of a catalog as many more popular bands.

I'm in the camp of I prefer to understand the lyrics but it's not necessary for me to enjoy the music.  I treat the vocals almost like another instrument, like an instrumental album.  If you like European power metal they're worth checking out.

According to Wikipedia, you're correct.  Johanna stated on the bands' forum that the initials don't mean anything.

Full wiki quote:

Concerning the origin and meaning of the initials HB, Johanna Kultalahti (Aaltonen) said at the official website of the band: "Actually the initials H and B don't really stand for anything. We once had a competition on our webpage, where people could suggest different meanings for the two letters. Holy Bible was one of the suggestions.

I enjoy those songs, I sampled their albums on I-tunes as well.

This time is bad for underground bands, that christian metal acts are. There is no album sales anymore. There is a huge loss of venues. Churches don´t have much extra money to organize concerts and clubs don´t take openly christian artists. Basicly there is zero money in the scene. People have dayjobs and families and there is no more time for bands like this.

Reaper has visited finnish christian music scene actively in the last years. Many great bands have given up.

I affirm this post with my 4.5 and 2 yr old.  Smile

As for the band, loved what they did. As a fan of some limited number of secular bands in this style (not big on female vocals) before being born again I was really pleasantly surprised to find HB. I wished the English lyrics meshed with the music better. They tended to be awkwardly phrased at times and didn't seem to translate well (Jesus Metal Explosion?). Still, I wish we would have gotten another album finished in English. I can't listen to or receive much from anything sung in another language.

My wife is the same way. I don't understand negating the artistic value of MUSIC because you can understand the sung LYRICS. It's like a non English song or even an instrumental track has the musical value of listening to a garbage disposal to folks in this group.

I wouldn't say this is how the music industry works at all. Maybe a corner of it at best...
