STRYPER COMING TO AN END? Empty STRYPER COMING TO AN END?

Post by Guest Fri May 13, 2016 1:26 am

Today Michael posted this on Facebook...

"I want to to encourage all of you to get out to a Stryper this year. I'm in no way, shape or form implying that we're calling it quits after this tour BUT (that's a big but), we certainly won't be around for years to come. You never know what the future holds and what God's plans are for any of us so my recommendation (if you're a fan) is to get out and see the show.
We're doing a "Fallen" set until September and then we go into a THWTD set from Sep/Dec (with original outfits). Go to: http://www.stryper.com/Tour/tour.html and get tickets and better yet, pick up some VIP's and you'll be entered to win a Washburn guitar!!! We love hanging with people and to be honest, my favorite part of the tour is meeting all of you at the VIP's.
See you soon and let's rock 2016 like no other!"

That is interesting. I don't think he implies this is then last tour and then that's it. It was announced prior to this that he/they are starting a new album in January 2017. I suspect they are doing another album or 2 and then they will stop. The first time they were around in the 80's and early 90's they did 5 original studio albums. Now since 2003 they have 4 original studio albums. After another 1-3 albums they may stop. Don't forget there will likely be an additional live album and/or a compilation of their hits or a covers album.

Michael has other things going on like his solo career, Sweet Lynch and producing other bands. We will have to wait and see. I would like to see them carry on for several years. It seems like they have gained a lot of ground from the past couple of albums and tours.

My first thought, is that Michael is trying to get butts out on this tour. But, they are also getting older, and no one knows when they may have to stop.

STRYPER COMING TO AN END? Empty Re: STRYPER COMING TO AN END?

Post by Guest Fri May 13, 2016 7:49 am

Answering the question of the thread, I don't think so. Of course, as Michael stated, Stryper won't be around for years to come, but this kind of expression could mean anything (I mean, how many years you think of when you read "years to come"?).

And, as we all know, when a successful band such as Stryper decide to split, they usually do a farewell tour. Not in a few cases, this tour is longer than expected and some bands end up doing lots of farewell tours. Sometimes I guess this is more of a marketing thing.

On the other hand, I know that there are many factors to considerate, such as the distance they live from each other, relationship between them, the label negotiation to keep making new albums, among many other things...

As Michael usually does, he wil likely clarify this in the coming hours, days or weeks, not that it's a bad thing. I think that Fallen is the last album under the current Frontiers contract or the first one. I can't remember. If it's the first one then they will have at least 2 more albums to do. On the other hand, i/we may be reading too much into this.

................................

I think stryper the band broke up along time ago...what I see now is The Michael Sweet band using the name of stryper...I mean the guy writes it all, records it all, tells each member what to play (including guitar solos note for note), manages it all and has made it clear he is the talent in the band..  Rolling Eyes
I wish Robert, Tim and Oz would fire Michael and get a new singer and then go out as stryper Smile

What makes you think this is any different than how the band operated in the 80's?
Look at the song writing credits on those first 5 albums, Michael Sweet wrote the lion's share of that music too (as a matter of fact it looks like none of the other band members did any writing for ATL).

Many of you might be surprised to learn that many "bands" are actually a group of musicians centered around a single mucisian who does a large portion of the writing and dictates much of how the band operates.  Rarely does every band member do a significant portion of the music writing/creating.

Thats true staybrite but when you get to the point of writing the guitar solos and then teaching them to the lead guitar player instead of letting him come up with his own...thats just sad.. Most band's dont do that Evil or Very Mad ...I mean Nikki Sixx lets mick play whatever and Aerosmith lets the other members create their own parts..heck, even Ted Nugent lets the other members of his band contribute  Shocked  ..both bands centered around a single or double member team..I guess what really soured me with Micheal was reading his book.. I actually haven't listened to s stryper album in full since then (except I did stream fallen all the way through and hated it)..The only stryper record I really liked was Against The Law and the Covering...both albums kinda ditched the whole Christian thing somewhat and came off more secular to me..
They are coming to my area and someone offered me free tickets and I turned them down...If stryper broke up today I wouldn't miss them..

Then why start a thread about them?  You don't see most folks here starting threads about bands they can't stand just to say they wouldn't miss them if they broke up.

I don't think that anyone would disagree that Michael has always been the main driving force behind the band.  Even when he left and the guys tried to do Sin Dizzy, it was different.  The songs they did were cool, but they didn't sound like Stryper anymore.  When Michael is done with the band and is out of ideas, then Stryper will end.  Seeing that he seems to be in the height of his creative career with Stryper and all his other projects, I doubt we've seen the last of the Holy Bumblebees for some time to come.

I can see this thread being locked or Michael posting something here out of agravation. There haven't been a Stryper thread here in a while. I can see why - people gets all worked up over the band. Perhaps Michael writes most of the parts because that's how the band prefers it - you never know. Perhaps Michael is typing to avoid some of the creative mistakes that were made in the 80's. We all know he is avoiding the financial mistakes that were made in the 80's.

Stryper is one of my favorite bands. They have created some of their best music since 2003 that rivals their early albums.

I still doubt it is terribly different from the way the band operated in the 80's.  I don't think most bands function as a true democracy or even as an equal partnership.

I've heard of bands who don't even have all the band members record on the album.  Sometimes bands with two guitarists will only have one of them record all the guitars on an album (usually under an attempt to maintain "consitency") at least one of the Ultimatum albums was recorded this way.  Rumor has it that Cinderalla almost never had their drummer (Fred Coury) record on their studio albums.  Queensryches guitarists did almost none of the recording on at least two of thier 2000's albums.  I was even told by a friend close to the band that the bass parts for Alice in Chains earlier albums were often recorded by the guitarist.  Richard Lynch has even admitted that the guitar and bass duties on several Saint albums were occasionaly recorded by whoever was around at the time (presumably still members of the band).  Just because a band member is listed in the credits doesn't mean they actually record all (or sometimes even any) of the music on the album.  A close look at the writing credits is usually a good indicator of who controls the creative output (and often other aspects) of  the band.

I loved Fallen and I heard No More Hell To Pay was pretty good too. It would be a shame to stop now that they've picked up some good momentum. Then again, I can see where you might want to stop at some point before you hit the downward curve.

Well, why not? This is not against the rules of the forum.

If he wants to dicuss Stryper, lets do it, no matter if he likes the band or not. At least he brought up an interesting discussion to the bands fans.
