Yes, I did!  The new one is not better than the original, but it is ever bit as good.  Baby Groot steals the show, too.

Really looking forward to seeing Guardians 2.  LOVED the first movie, and I've been waiting eagerly for the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a lot more fun than all of the other Marvel superhero films I've seen in the last several years.  Although, it's really more of a space opera than a superhero movie.

Kubo & the Two Strings

That was a very pleasant surprise to me.  I had initially passed up renting it because I thought the cover looked kind of goofy.  Then I read a bit about it and decided it might be worth seeing after all, and it was.  It's a great movie with a lot of heart.  I also think it was a lot cooler in stop motion than it would have been in CG.

I don't care for the vast majority of superhero movies, but to me, this one really stands about above the rest.  It poses some big moral questions and I thought was very well done, though I could've done without the sex/nudity...

Watched "Spy". I try, but just can't get into Melissa McCarthy's movies. This one was a little bit better. I think if she toned down the vulgarness of her act, I'd like her a lot more. I think I've started a few movies of hers, and turned them off after about 15 minutes. It's a shame, because I think she is a good actress.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Getting us primed for seeing number two tomorrow.

What did you think of Logan?

I recently watched Get Out.  It was pretty good but not nearly as great as everyone made it out to be.  It had a very generic plot but was still entertaining.

It was entertaining. If I were more into the X-Men, I would have enjoyed it more, I think. I haven't seen all of the previous movies and I was a little lost on some things. There was plenty of action but I'm still reluctant to recommend it, unless you're an X-Men fan.

So, Get Out... better or worse than Lights Out?

Re: Recently Watched Movies

Post by Kerrick on Wed May 31, 2017 3:32 pm

Gotcha.  Eh, I liked the first two X-Men movies enough when they came out, but since then I've become quite bored with superhero flicks in general.  Maybe I'll watch it one of these days.

I didn't see Lights Out.  Was it good?  I looked and it has decent reviews.  I posted this on the Metal Archives (where many folks were discussing Get Out) which may give you a more detailed explanation of my thoughts:

Kerrick wrote:So I finally watched Get Out the other night. Non spoiler review: I thought it was decent. It wasn’t a bad movie, though I don’t think it was a particularly great movie either. There was quite a bit about the movie that I liked. The acting was pretty solid throughout, cinematography and such totally adequate and in some instances (such as the opening scene) very good, pacing was great, and overall it was quite entertaining. For the most part, there was a great attention to detail which I enjoyed. Some of the dialog was great, particularly how throughout the film white people try to acknowledge the main character’s “blackness” in ways that make them seem not-racist. (“I would’ve voted for Obama a third time if I could,” etc.) My main gripes are plot and script. Granted, part of my disappointment stems from having watched the trailer which basically tells the entire story. So if you haven’t watched the trailer yet and plan to watch the movie, I highly recommend just going straight for the movie and skipping the trailer. Despite that, the plot was extremely generic and one I’ve seen numerous times over in many other films. Its gimmick was that it tacked race issues too which seems to have been enough for the critics to separate it from the rest of similar movies. As a suspense/horror/thriller flick, it was decent enough though certainly nothing special. Quite average I’d say. As a socio-political commentary, I think it was also pretty generic and possibly held back by its plot. I think it could’ve been a much better movie had Peele gone all-in for either horror OR social commentary. But what we got was something sort of in between that IMO wasn’t especially strong in either. Also, I thought the humor fell pretty flat. With more clever writing, the humor could’ve really elevated the movie. I read an interview with him and he sounded like a very sharp and thoughtful guy, though the commentary he gave on the alternate ending was almost comically like that of a freshman film student haha. That being said, this was his first movie as writer/director and considering that, he did a pretty fantastic job. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him and expect in time he’ll make some really great flicks.

^That one was pretty decent I thought.  I really appreciated how it went from straight-up sci-fi to slasher horror.  I like it when movies don't stay in just one predetermined genre.

Went to the latest pirates movie with my daughters. The only thing that kept me awake was the popcorn!

Johnny Depp acted bored, and his character is old (not physically old, but "been there, done that" old). The only thing I really liked about the whole story is how back-story details are provided for every every main series character that we don't already know about (Barbossa, Sparrow, etc.) and that each character's storyline is brought to a more or less fitting end. They did provide a little post-credits tease of more to come, but I'd be surprised if they did any more. This series has played itself out.

I went to see this today.  Loved it!  It is one of the more fun movies to watch.

Is it over the top brain candy?  Yep!  Do you still have a drunken Jack Sparrow just narrowly getting by?  Yep!  Same schtick, but it works.

I did love how they tidied every character up, but with the teaser at the end, they are definitely going after one more.

I finished watching the 70's Dr. Strange TV movie. Ugh! It was a labor of love. These old 70's MARVEL TV movies are painfully slow and low on action. Maybe it was just the times.

Also watched The Masterminds. It's a comedy about the biggest heist in American history. Was not that funny.
