My wife and I recently finished reading (er, listening to the audio book of) Compelling Interest: The Real Story behind Roe v. Wade by Roger Resler.  Wow, what a fantastic book.  I highly recommend.  Especially with all that's going on in the news these days with regards to abortion, it's an excellent book to have read.

The Hunt for Red October - Tom Clancy

Re-reading.  This is the book that got me back into reading as an adult.  Between 6th grade and my first year of college I don't think I read anything not required for school.

Albert Vigoleis Thelen - The island of second sight

Discovered the book by chance in spring. I think it's pretty unknown, even in germany, where the author was born. A real gigant pot of sprawling prose, irony, philosophy, humor... Even if I disagree with some of the points that Thelen puts down as the story proceeds, I do like the book and his way to tell the story very much. And I am touched by the way he must have loved his wife (they where not really married, but stayed together for their whole life and he always speaks of her, Beatrice, has his wife) which, I think, can be discovered in the way he gently mocks her.
A shame that Thelen asked Beatrice to burn all his never published works after his death, and even more shame she actually did so.

I'm reading Lightning by Dean Koontz

Every now and then I get stuck in Stephen King and Dean Koontz and that's all I read for a period of time...this time it started when I read the latest book in the Dark Tower series (which I totally love, by the way).

Both fantastic writers.  I remember stumbling onto the Dark Tower series back in 1989.  Someone gave me a copy of the first book and I was hooked.  I ran out a few days later and got the second book.  Then I had to wait two years until the next one.  I'm a huge fan of the series.

Yeah, they're both fantastic. But the first time I tried reading The Gunslinger, I wasn't impressed, so I didn't read any more of the books in the series until I read The Talisman by King and Straub. I liked it, read up on it on the internet, and realised that it had a lot in common with the Dark Tower series. At this point, all the books besides The Wind Through the Keyhole had been released, so I went to the library, borrowed The Gunslinger, liked it and borrowed them all one by one and read them until I was done with the series Smile Then I had to wait a little longer until TWTtK was released.

You might have already noticed this but the more King novels and short stories you read you will discover a lot of "cross-over" stuff from The Dark Tower in those other stories (not all of them mind you, but more than just a couple).
I also really liked The Talisman, have you read the sequel they wrote together "Dark House"?  It's been years since I read it, but I remember it being a bit darker than The Talisman.  Rumor has it they are supposed to be working on a third book together.

I've noticed, and I've looked up a lot of these connections online before deciding which books to read next Very Happy I own a copy of Dark House, but I haven't actually read it yet. But each and every comment I've heard about it has said that it's better than The Talisman, so i really need to read it soon...and a third book, that sounds exciting Smile

Love the Dark Tower. Glad I read Salem's Lot before Wolves of the Calla as well as it made Callahan's redemption even more meaningful IMO.

That's why I like to check for connections first. It's been a few years since I read Wolves of the Calla, but I didn't read Salem's Lot until last summer, and when I did - well, like you, I thought Callahan's redemption in WotC made more sense. Reading them the other way would probably have been a better experience. Not that this was a bad one, but I think you get the point Smile
