BOMB! Luke Easter has stepped down as vocalist of Tourniquet.

Post by STX on Mon Dec 28, 2015 3:13 pm

Tourniquet announcement: By mutual and respectful agreement, Luke Easter has stepped down as vocalist of Tourniquet. Ted says: “Luke has been a valuable member of Tourniquet since 1993 and we have shared much music, ministry, and laughter. I will always appreciate his valuable contribution to our music and his representation of the band – and I know many of you will too. We’ve decided that our musical paths are not quite going in the same direction. Luke has been, and is - a great friend. I truly wish the best for him and look forward to seeing whatever his future holds.”
From Luke: In June, 1993, my life changed. I joined Tourniquet and began a musical journey that has lasted more than two decades. I got the opportunity to see the world; to meet and work with amazing people; to contribute to a body of work that I am proud of; and in the process I was able to share Christ with people all over the world. I am grateful to have been a part of Tourniquet, and to have had the chance to work with someone as talented and prolific as Ted for as long as I have.

I liked some of the Easter albums. His departure is bittersweet. I look forward to both Luke and Tourniquets future though!

Another Vanishing Lessons fan!

I don't think I have a single favorite band, but if you put a gun to my head and made me pick one, I'd say Tourniquet.  I like all eras/singers.  Vanishing Lessons is my favorite of the bunch and one of my favorite albums of all time.

What is this entity called as a band? Is it just a name or is it a community of people who do music together and perform concerts regularly?

Tourniquet has been just a name for a long time. The "band" has been just Ted Kirkpatrick project for a long time. Actually I was expecting something like this to happen.

And it is not a bad thing. Ted is doing great music. I think he is doing well just doing project albums with players changing around.

There ARE better vocalists than Luke out there. But my favourite TQT albums are POD, MVOATR, WMARD and Acoustic Archives - so the albums with Luke had a bigger impact on me than the first three.

So it's time to say THANKS for all the years he contributed to TQT's incredible music!

I wouldn't be surprised if TQT would continue as Ted's "project" without any permanent members except him and maybe Aaron.

Ted has been doing this forever...its amazing for any band, esp one in the Christian market to last this long...Look at Deliverance...they have broken up at least a couple of times and they staeted around the same time..Lukes given them iver 20 years...its a solid run.

Actually I'm glad to hear that. I bet Luke is a great person and his voice was liked by many. But I'm afraid I didn't like his style. Not trying to bash him I personally considered his style of singing rather generic and uninteresting. Maybe Tourniquet returns in a way I'm able to dig again. Starting with Crawl to China I lost my interest with quite some sadness. I loved them once.

Put a fork in this band, stop dreaming about them becoming good again, and support newer Christian metal bands who are doing their best.

I am actually sad to see Luke go.  Did not care a ton for the last official album, or the Ark disc, but VL, WMARD, and the "new" tracks (can I still call them new? They're pushing 20 years old!  LOL) of the "best of" disc are all things I very much enjoy listening to, and Luke was a vital part of them.

Thank you for the years, Mr. Easter......good luck with whatever endeavors the future holds do you......

I have pretty-much not been very interested in what this band has been doing for awhile. I hope a new vocalist will bring some new life into the band. For personal tastes, I hope Ted brings in a singer that is more classic metal sounding rather than someone of a " core " nature vocalist.

Luke was a good vocalist. The fact that he wasn't Guy Ritter doesn't make him a bad vocalist. Microscopic View was my first Tourniquet album and still one of my favorites. I don't think Tourniquet has become a bad band, I think they have just changed more than most would like. Antiseptic Bloodbath was lacking a little but it wasn't terrible by any means.

I just wish they had more (musical) success.  I couldn't care less if they were billionaires from their music if it was actually good these days.  In fact, I would be happy for them.

I'm just a bit tired of every veteran band being discussed in a way that is invariably pining for their good old days when their last truly great album was a decade or two ago.  Whenever DELIVERANCE for example puts out something new, most people want it to be like their first two albums.

It reminds me of people saying any upcoming METALLICA album *just might* be a return to their past glories and getting jonesed about a 15 second sample of a new song.

It just sounds to me like some extremely wishful thinking and nothing but pipe dreams.  I just think some people never learn.

A vocalist change in this band is not gonna bring back the good old days.  Luke was not holding them back in that regard.

I wouldn't say all this about STRYPER for example because I think they have tried much harder to be a quality, enjoyable band and win back their fanbase.

Ted just posted a follow-up today, stating that there will be a new Tourniquet album in 2016 with a new vocalist (not a collection of vocalists). Here's what he said:

Hey everyone. Just a quick update on the present and future of Tourniquet. First, Tourniquet is not going away. I have more than a lifetime of music to give, and God willing, I plan to share it with whoever would like to hear it, just as I always have – under the name Tourniquet.

The classical influence, the medical terminology, the allegories to nature, the beautiful and the ugly sounds, the fast and the slow, the ordinary and the unexpected, the triumphs and challenges to faith and hope – all these things you the fans have indicated you like about our music – will continue - and continue in new ways.

The new material is very heavy (and sometimes beautiful), and full of melody and twists. Vocals will be with a new singer – not a collection of vocalists (although I love doing that, as you know by now – wait ‘til you hear the guys on the Sabbath tunes!)

So – thank you all for hanging in there – onward to 2016 and beyond – and a very Happy New Year to you all! - Ted

I hate to hear that Luke is gone.  His wwas the only era of Tourniquet that I liked.  You could see this coming, though, with all the guest vocalists on The Tourniquet Ark.

While I've always preferred Guy and my favorite albums are from that era, there's no denying that Luke was an integral part of Tourniquet for over 20 years. I mean, most of my life I've been expecting to hear Luke in Tourniquet albums. I've never really even entertained the thought of Luke someday leaving the band. He might've sometimes been average, but most of the time he was good, and at times he was phenomenal. Even in Antiseptic Bloodbath, I still absolutely love what he does in the last half of Flowering Cadaver.

Vanishing Lessons is a classic.
I couldn't imagine it sung by anyone else but Luke.

I'm very interested in hearing how the new vocalist sounds like. I'm very interested in hearing how he sings the old tunes from both eras.
However, there's the pessimist in me that is worrying about Ted's "recent" honeymoon with core-vocals. He has been praising these modern core-vocalists and even used them in his newest album. To be truthful, I still can't see any difference between the core-parts of Onward to Freedom with how all the other core-bands sound like.

Just look at what Anthrax tried to do when they replaced John Bush with Dan Nelson. They tried to go with that core-sound and it did not turn out well at all.

If Ted decides to go with that style, I guess I can still get some enjoyment from the fresh enthusiasm these core-guys usually have. While I didn't like their style in Onward to Freedom, there still was this clear sense of energy flowing through them. And they could sound very good in the non-core parts.

Anyways, it's an interesting time to be a Tourniquet fan. Not only am I interested in hearing what Tourniquet is going to do (remember, Ted told the next live shows would have TWO guitarists, so perhaps the next album will have two guitarists as well), but I'm also interested in seeing if Luke is getting into another band, or starts a band of his own. He's been really good in singing stuff like Vanishing Lessons and Crawl to China, and Stryper covers, so I'd be very interested in hearing whatever he is going to do. I'm there to pick up the first album he'll be on out of support and genuine interest.

So do I, but my guess would be a singer that is closer to core than to classic metal. My opinion is based on most singers that have been on The Tourniquet Ark album.

Eh just have Matt Smith be the new vocalist. Then we could have Theoniquet.

It's too bad Luke is leaving, but I can't blame him. He's not really in a "band" per se, it seems like he just gets called in to do vocals...sometimes... once a decade or so Very Happy . I know he wrote a couple tracks for Antiseptic Bloodbath, but I don't think it's really like being part of a regular, functioning band. I don't think he lives close to Ted so there's that too. It's not like Tourniquet was really putting out albums every couple years and touring.

Anyway, I wish Luke the best and look forward to a new Tourniquet album! Unless it's like Onward To Freedom...

... I was just about to buy onward. then I read this...

I hope Luke gets called back in one day lol Razz Microscopic is my favorite album from tourni. I loved that Chaotic, technical, on point sound. just resonated with me. Antiseptic is also way up on my list too so there's that.

I am le sad.

Get Michael Sweet involved full time and then they will be nailed for just being in this for the money.

If we can get Jimmy P. Brown and Deliverance involved, we will assuredly reach critical mass and have a thread closure!

lol!
