W.A.S.P. - Golgotha

Post by My Awesome Timothy on Sun Sep 13, 2015 10:34 am

Brand new album out Oct 22nd 2015 called 'Golgotha'.  Am seeing them live in Bristol, England on the 22nd of September and am really excited about going!  A friend saw them in London yesterday and they were awesome.  The title track has a line at the start of the chorus that goes 'Jesus I Need You Now'...... how cool is that a praise and worship song at a W.A.S.P. gig!!!

Will send some links in a moment!!!

The whole band may not be made of Christians.  But, Blackie Lawless is.  WASP is Blackie's band and he is the primary songwriter for the group.  This will be just like Stryper and Rob Rock:  Christians making art that shines upon Jesus but manage to do it in a secular market.

Some of you might recall that back in 2009 I played a track from "W.A.S.P.: Babylon" on The Master's Metal and caught a LOT of heat from my audience.

It was understandable.  I mean...I am old enough to have been around during those crazy early days of W.A.S.P. and knew of the very not-Christian-friendly era of the band.  I was not into them, to be honest.  I was a Thrash/Speed Metal guy (and a hardcore Straight Edge kid...but, that is another story).  But, you couldn't avoid hearing the stories back in those days.

However, I had heard rumors of Blackie Lawless (real name: Steven Duren) becoming a Christian and vowing to bury the old man and start living his faith out loud.  When Babylon was released, I was very curious and cautious.  Some friends and I decided to go see W.A.S.P. live down in Los Angeles the next year to see if we might get a feel for this profession of faith Blackie had expressed in a few magazine and television interviews during that time.  I tell you, it was rather obvious that something was different with him, in a good way.  When we were welcomed to meet the band after the show, I shared with them (including Blackie) that I had a broadcast/podcast showcasing "Christian oriented Metal music", he was genuinely interested and took the time to dial it up on his phone (nope, not kidding).  I asked him if he was comfortable with his new music being played on my "Christian oriented" program and he said, "Oh, man!  Absolutely!  That is great! Thank you for the support!".

Steven is not a perfect man and if you are to hold him up to a microscope, you will find conflicts.  The same can be said of myself.  But, I really got the feeling back then...and still believe he is on the right path today.

Yes and the album actually comes out on October 9th.  Unless that date has been moved back.  That is what amazon.com shows and I believe that their labels usa site is the same.  It will be out on October 2 in Europe.

I WILL BE GETTING THIS.

Funny thing is, that's how it was always supposed to be. Out in the world, but not 'of' it.

Instead, Christians (myself included) created a special 'scene' for themselves in the 1970s and 80s (and on up til now, but more and more are becoming 'aware' of this problem) ...

and it really wasn't what Jesus wanted. He wanted us to be like Him. Out with the sinners and amongst the sin. Sorry, but I don't really see a difference between Christian or secular music. Lyrics alone should not create a whole new genre.

The movie, Saved is an excellent example of the kinds of problems this created ...

To me it's all Metal and I hope more and more bands become like Stryper, Trouble, King's X, WASP, Megadeth, etc ... and stop calling themselves "Christian" bands ... and start shining the light of God by example.

Sorry ... I'll stop now, I know I'm new here. But this topic really showcases how true this is.

I saw the live footage of Golgotha and I was never a fan of WASP and only heard an album or 2 and other songs on the radio, video stations of the Internet.  I must say Blackie still has it and obviously the spirit, feel of his music gas changed.  This may sound weird but I sensed the Holy Spirit when I was watching the video. I am some what skeptal whrl secular artists confess they are Christians but Blackie seems quite serious about his faith.  That song is anointed.

Re: W.A.S.P. - Golgotha

Post by sentient 6 on Sun Sep 27, 2015 2:13 pm

I will say that I liked the last album. I'm not gonna say that it ministered or encouraged me in my faith, but its nice to have a somewhat " clean " album to listen too if a want one.

It will be interesting to see where Blackie takes this band having professed Christ. It looks like a slow weening process though. I think hes gonna have to make some hard decisions though on what exactly he wants to stand for. I think Golgotha and songs like On your Knees or LOVE Machine do not have a lot in common. I know he has taken " Animal " out of the set list but from what I've seen from posted set lists there are still many songs that are just as bad. There still seems to be lot of " friendship with the world ( James 4:4 )" going on in his intent. I hope as he grows in faith and love for Christ that this will change in time. And then again, maybe I'm wrong about the songs in his current set list.

I know a lot of what I'm saying is easier said than done, and we are not in his shoes. It takes courage to stand for righteousness in a world who does not value it, let alone in the metal world. Lets pray that Blackie will have a ever desire to be " salt and light " in a world that needs it. And that one day he will use his platform to proclaim the clear and simple message of the Cross of Christ.

....I know....not very " metal " of me....but my opinion non the less.

I'm listening to this new one on Spotify this morning. It's good, but at the same time, I feel like I've heard it already. Blackie, I think, has just run out of ideas. This sounds the same as Babylon and Detonator. I don't mean "the same" as same style, but rather it sounds so similar that I feel like I'm listening to those albums instead of a new one. I'll listen to it a few more times before I decide to buy it, but right now, I'm gonna pass. I love that he's got such a different lyrical outlook now, but the music is just getting stale.

I quite enjoyed it myself, though aside from "Scream" and "Shotgun", i noticed it had a slightly more mellow feel. Dont get me wrong, its still metal all the way (aside from "Miss You"), but its more mid-paced than their other work (though to be fair, one cant expect blackie or even the band to sound like its 1984 again, as much as we'd like that).

I stopped listening to W.A.S.P. in the late 80's (mostly due to my love for thrash), but started again with Babylon about a year ago. I like both, but it's like two different bands with the same singer. After giving it some thought, I think it's the absence of Chris Holmes that makes it different for me. Still a good band, but different.

I somewhat agree and disagree with this.  I see what you are saying and think that it is great.  However, there has always been music made for the church that those outside just didn't get.  So, to totally toss out a Christian scene that makes music that the church will sing today and for ages to come is just as important as what you described.  If it feeds the faith of disciples of Christ and encourages us to live more like Jesus did by reaching others, then it was worth it, too.

To be honest, I think that there is equal room for BOTH types of artists.  We need those that are feeding the flock and those that are sowing seeds in the world however minuscule.  I also think we need artists that are more open about their faith that walk both in the Christian and secular markets so that those small seeds can be watered.  I see no difference with this than any one of us sharing our faith in whatever vocation we have chosen.  Some of us will sow small seeds, some will add more to that, and others will be loudly proclaiming the message.  All are necessary.

I had been  waiting for something on this album to jump out at me and it finally happened yesterday with this one.

The funny thing is, now the whole album sounds different to me. I guess it's just part of the oddity that is me.

I hear you.  I like the last song, but the album as a whole still hasn't grabbed me.
