Galactic Cowboys - S/T 24 years ago today

Post by deathisgain on Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:45 am

Can't believe it has been 24 years. Love this disc. Played it non-stop after a friend of mine turned me on to it.

This is one of my favorite tracks:

Time flies...

Almost 2 and 1/2 decades later and I still don't care much for it. They did some cool things in the music, but I just don't care for the sound. Maybe it's the production... I don't know.

It's good, but no doubt an odd album. One partsounds like Anthrax, the next like The Beatles. Like King's X but more wild.

It's not my favorite GC album, but they're definitely one of my favorite bands.

Wow, good memory for release dates!

I probably give the slight nod to Space in Your Face because it was my intro to the band, but the self-titled and Space in Your Face are definitely my favorite GC albums.  Whenever I do a home improvement project, you'll often hear me humming, "Me and my hammer..." Smile

Time to pull this one out for a listen. I can remember the day I bought this. It was recommended by the music store guy when I was buying some King's X.

Not my favorite by them but still very solid.  They are one of the few bands that made consistently good albums and stayed true to their style.

Up until "Let it Go", they should've let that one go...

Yeah.  The actual songs are good but the weird filler/novelty/joke songs and the never-ending ending ruined it.

I would say its a tie between this one and Space for favorite.

On a related note, this ones a fav off of SIYF..

I've always interpreted this songs as a commentary on abortion, but I guess it could be one against hunting or about animals ? scratch The " doctor " part kind of leads me towards abortion, but maybe its not about any of those things ? Anyone know the story ?

I saw them in concert and all they'd say about this song is it could be about the guy next door. Seriously. Sure sounds like the argument for abortion though.

I always took it as a song about abortion too.

i love Galactic Cowboys. I have all their bonus tracks and a demo song "chia pet" that Monty released on his podcast.

For those who can't stand listening to "Let it Go" because of all the annoying stuff, i edited it all out so the record flows all the way through. PM me if you want to hear it.

I think my original interpretation was about physician-assisted suicide or maybe animals, but I'm pretty sure I read some interview or commentary later on (probably close to 20 years ago at this point) that indicated it was about abortion.  My respect for the band grew even more after I listened to the song from that angle.  Of course, I can't remember my source anymore, but I think the abortion interpretation fits the best with the lyrics.

Monty explained it in one of his podcasts a long time ago that it is simply about a guy who works in a slaughterhouse and just carves up cattle all day long in a section of the slaughterhouse called "the Kill Floor."
