Any black metal fans here?

Post by CrimsonWarrior on Thu Jul 30, 2015 8:39 am

I'll give a brief introduction. Hi, I'm CrimsonWarrior. I've been lurking at this forum for a while but only recently decided to join. From looking at the forum, it seems that most of the discussion is about the more non-extreme styles of metal (thrash, heavy, power, etc.). I'm curious to know, are there many black metal fans around here?

As you may be able to guess from my avatar (and username), Crimson Moonlight is my all-time favorite band.

I also collect rare/underground stuff as well. Dormant is one of my favorites:

I also like Vaakevandring, Antestor, Shadows of Paragon, Vials of Wrath, and too many other bands to list.

Any other fans around here?

Sure, there's a solid handful of us here.  I'm not as up on stuff or as rare/underground as I used to be (and was never probably THAT much), but I still love the sound.  Crimson Moonlight's been my favorite since Covenant Progress, too.

I also really like Grave Declaration, Lengsel (Solace), Sanctifica (Spirit of Purity), Enshrouding, Neizbezhnost, Divine Symphony, Dark Endless, Antestor, old Kekal, Slechtvalk, Dark Lay Still, Frost Like Ashes, Usynlig Tumult, Synnove, Vaakevandring, Poems of Shadows.  More, of course, but those are probably most of my "go-to's."  I've never really checked out Shadows of Paragon or Vials or Wrath, who you mention.

If you like old Crimson Moonlight you will LOVE Shadows of Paragon. Metal Helm has copies of their album (it's called "Through the Valley Within").

Vials of Wrath is easily one of the best Christian black metal bands that is still making music today. He plays black/ambient that is very nature-influenced. He has a new album coming out this year and he also has a Bandcamp page where you can listen to what he's already released. Just search "Vials of Wrath" on Bandcamp. I would give you a link but my account is too new so the forum doesn't let me.

Welcome dude!  Good to see you here.

I love me my black metal (as you already know).  I definitely second the Vials Of Wrath.  They're one of my favorites now.  Grindboy, here's my favorite song of theirs:

I wouldn't say that Shadows of Paragon is quite as good as Crimson Moonlight, but they're up there. I hope they're working on something new.

Thought you would never ask.... I love black metal! The genre is often over saturated
with sound a like bands but then there is the good stuff. To be honest I have not heard much christian black metal yet so I will look up some of the names you guys have listed in this thread and explore.

If you are looking for unique bands, I recommend Drottnar and early/mid Kekal. They are both very experimental and great.

As the pretty much only non-toxic thread I've seen in the last while, maybe I'll try to make something of a positive contribution!

The Vials of Wrath does sound pretty good.  Honestly there's not much that really grabs me and makes me excited anymore, what with my old age and all.  But the slower stuff often seems to grow with time and repeated listens, I'll keep my eye out for them.  Thanks for the links and recommendations.

A couple lesser-known bands that have surprised me with being pretty solid over the years have been Eulogium, Exegesis, and Death Requisite.  None of which would I put on the top shelf, but for sure with something to offer.

first of all wellcome, although i haven't been very much here lately  lol!

I also like Black metal.

Symphonic Black metal is one of my favourite genres, but i also like melodic black and post black metal. I also like few classic sounding (not overly) raw black metal.

I also like Crimson Moonlight. Eternal Emperor is my favourite stuff by them ( Where darkness cannot reach! what an anthem Metal 2). I really enjoyed the covenant progress although it has much less keyboards, but the next album i found to be so boring and lifeless....

Antestor's The return and Vaakevandring are great stuff. Some of the best CBM for me. Other cool stuff is the first Slechtvalk album and maybe the second, as well as Grave declaration.

Other bands i like includes:

Anorexia Nervosa (Redemption process is one of the best SBM albums ever)
Vesperian Sorrow - Everything. Specially Beyond the cursed ecplise and Stormwinds of ages.
Inquinok - Entranced by twilight's gaze
Carach angren - lammendam
Lyfhtrasyr - The final ressurrection
Chthonic - 9th empyrean, relentless recurrence and Seediq bale are a must
Sirius - Aeons of magick
Winterburst - The mind cave
Deafheaven - sunbather. Awesome post black
Lantlos - neon. same as deafheaven
Vinterland - Welcome to my last chapter. Mindblowing meloblack.
Lunar Aurora - Mond. More classical black metal sounding.

That's a good secular list.  I prefer symphonic black metal as well, but have a strong soft spot for black metal so raw that most black metal fans have a hard time digesting it.

Regarding symphonic black metal, I know of quite a few outstanding lesser known bands.  I'll just start with two random picks.

From Belgium

From South Korea

EDIT: UGH, I wish this forums youtube code could digest https...  so I wouldn't forget to change it from http!

For Raw Black Metal i can digest some tracks. I like Elgibbor and like the atmosphere on his songs, but too much this kind of black metal makes me bored. I prefere it on little doses and i think just Elgibbor (hey let's be honest, he makes MAANYY albums) that's enough for me. I think i find it way too repetitive, well just my thoughts of course.

I knew Dark Mirror ov tragedy for name but never looked into their music. However, the song you put here rocks! Symphoblack done right! I will look into them. It reminded to me a band i listened Friday called Oathen from south Korea too. The first album is more meloblack (a bit like dissection) and the second and third album i consider them as symphonic black metal. Check them out! you will like it.  Also Aevlord kick ass. Check their song Zenith (i can't find right now it). Catamenia is also a good band, specially the albums eternal winter prophecy and chaos born.

Do you know some lesser know stuff similar to

Stormblast/Enthrone Darkness Triumphant/ Spiritual Black Dimensions - Dimmu Borgir

Dusk...and her embrace, Midian - Cradle of filth

Slaughter of innocence, Dark requiems..... - Hecate Enthroned

In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the welkin at dust - Emperor

Engraved in black - Scource of malice - Graveworm

Do you know stuff like that? I don't care if it is considered as True Black Metal, Fake Symphoblack, Extreme gothic metal, Extreme symphonic metal, pop black metal, baby disney black metal..... as long as it has the ethereal choruses, dark symphonies, pianos and the like...

From my collection the closest things i have are Early Chthonic, Inquinok, Sirius, Lyfhtrasyr and maybe Vesperian Sorrow.

If you check out some older Troll or Gehenna albums, they sound a lot like the older Dimmu Borgir.  Better than them in some respects.

You should get your hands on Old Man Child's "In Defiance of Existence".  It doesn't sound like what you stated, but I'd highly recommend it.

There's not too many bands that sound like old(er) Hecate Enthrone / Cradle of Filth, especially in the vocals.  I love Graveworm's old stuff too - "As The Angels Reach the Beauty" is sooooooooooo good.

Abigail Williams "In the Shadow Of A Thousand Suns".  A good example of a US band going from core to black.  Albums after this one, they go REALLY black.

Xanthochroid is another recommendation.  They're from the US and have keys that sometimes remind me of Anorexia Nervosa.  (they also get soft and heavy, soft and heavy quite a bit)

I already knew Abigail Williams. Forgot to put them here. Only have that album. The symphonics are pretty damn good, but the vocals are so corish and so bad it makes me want to kill the screamer. I have tolerance for bad vocals, but that ones are so bad it's unbelibeable.

Anyway i let you my lastfm profile page. You can check the bands i have if i forgot some. At least you can see more or less what are my preferences. http://www.lastfm.es/user/Kaiser_19

I knew a bit of Old man's child, but never wanted to listen fully it because of the lyrics content. It's ok for me if a band has dark lyrics, but the way dimmu/hecate/graveworm/old man's child are way too strong.  I mean, i've listened few songs from each band to know more or less where do i want to know, but i wound't like having them on my computer with songs about Satan, satan, satan and satan. It's a shame because of the wasted talent there, since this three songs are memorable to be honest. The same applies to Graveworm and Hecate

That Xantochroid song sounds killer too. I liked the big presence of the pianos (hey not everything should be orchestras and strings, and glad is not here). It seems i have to check this band too.

Sorry I'm a little late chiming in... I have been on extended leave from CMR.

For Dimmu/Graveworm (less so Graveworm, more Enthrone/Puritanical Dimmu), recommendation: Renascent - Through Darkness (I think they have another album but hard to get a copy, this one is the best anyway)
***Grave Declaration has already been mentioned but want to re-iterate, they are one of the best if not best Christian Symphonic Unblack***
more importantly...
For Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse (which was my favorite non-Christian BM album when I used to listen to it), recommendation: Sanctifica - Spirit Of Purity (this album only) <-- TRUST ME you won't be disappointed...

My son is usually listening to Veggie Tales songs in the car, but lately I have been introducing him to different stuff to see how he likes it. So far starting him on thrash and power metal. He like Ancient Prophecy and REALLY liked the new Disaffection demo.

He will be 2 in 2 months though so a little early.

As for black metal while I am a fan of black metal I honestly do have a hard time getting into alot of the raw, lo-fi bm.

A shame that this wasn't mentioned earlier. Definitely one of the BEST black metal albums ever released by Christians.
