Found a cool site where you can see the dynamic range of remastered CD's compared to original releases. I don't own any Priest remasters but I have heard they are terrible. The lower the number, the worse they are. Check it out here:

In the upper right hand corner is a "links" button. You can download software and analyze your own cd's and upload the results to the site. I haven't downloaded it yet but look forward to checking it out. I did a quick look of the original Rush Vapor Trails and as expected it was poor. I was surprised that the Vapor Trails remix also scored low. Stryper's latest releases were also very low.

Brickwall mastering (all frequencies' volume slammed to the max) is a pet peeve of mine. Unfortunately, hard rock/metal is one of the worst offenders. Everything is being mastered to sound "good" through ear buds and tiny computer speakers nowadays, which sounds like crap through a proper stereo system. Initially, you might think "man, this is slammin'!", but as you listen, having everything maxed out and no dynamics leaves your ears feeling fatigued.
I fully realize most people couldn't care less about this subject, but they don't realize what they're missing, and most don't care. But some of us still care about sound quality.

I downloaded the app and tried it out, it's pretty cool. I didn't have time to do a whole lot but I did upload the results for GX Project. I detect quite a bit of compression on "Raze Some Hell" and the results indicate that, it has poor DR.

I also did a few from Saint (didn't have time to do a bunch). There are a ton of Christian bands not listed on that site.

Basically what you have to do is rip the CD to wav or mp3 (I used both, wav lossless and 320 mp3 lossy). Then you analyze the songs and you can upload the results. I plan to do more when i have the time.

The recent Saint releases also scored poorly. To each his own I guess, as I think they sound pretty good.

thank God some else cares about dynamics.
almost every metal release is brickwalled.

Mike Slamer is the only i know of that keeps the dynamics in new recordings. Anything he produces has great dynamics and you can really tell the difference!

This probably explains why I prefer the older production standards (pre-2000's).
