Angelica - Favorite vocalist

Post by bjorn agin on Fri Jun 26, 2015 7:01 pm

Dennis Cameron's band Angelica had a constant change in the vocalist department (Well to be fair, almost all of the band members besides Dennis constantly changed). I listened to my old tape of Rock, Stock & Barrel earlier today (not a bad album at all hearing it for the first time in awhile). It got me thinking. Who is your favorite Angelica vocalist?

Rob Rock...

The self titled debut is the only Angelica album I listen to, for the most part. I will throw on RS&B maybe once every five years.

Mazza because Walkin' In Faith is my fave release

Rob Rock is way more unique of a vocalist

but because Walkin rocks so good I pick him

I like Rob, Jerome & Drew equally for what they brought to each album. I appreciate all "Forms" of Angelica...except for the drum machine Smile

Mazza gets my vote, even though I haven't the slightest idea of what he looked like or what happened to him. I thought his voice fit Angelica's sound perfectly. I love "Walkin' In Faith", still one of my all-time favorites.

Baca was a good replacement for Mazza, I enjoy his vocals too.

I like Rob Rock, but I personally don't think he was the right vocalist for Angelica's sound. Just my two cents...

I went with Tamplin. That one song is so good. His voice is just nearly perfect for melodic metal, and fit Cameron's music like a glove. I enjoy Drew Baca quite a bit as well. I would love to see him singing again.

I went with Drew as my favorite release was "Rock, Stock, & Barrel".  I felt that they band had finally found the sound that made them unique with this lineup.

On the list of vocalists, though, Dennis Cameron was left off.  He sang a couple of the songs on Angelica's final release.

I voted Mazza.

I love everything Rob Rock is involved in and I think I like the s/t Angelica album at least equal to Walkin In Faith but like Pathogenic said Mazza's vocals fit the sound perfectly.

Baca is a good vocalist too, I just don't like Time Is All It Takes as well (I don't have Rock, Stock, & Barrel).

I'm surprised Jerome is leading as well, although Walkin' In Faith is my favorite of the Angelica albums. There's just something that really gels on that album. I don't even mind the drum machine (which is rare for me).

Actually Tamplin was the lead on the WHOLE Demo tape in 1988 but Andy Lyon took over on the S.O.S. tape and then Tamplin did only one song on the Selftitled and Rob Rock did the Rest of the leads on that album.  My favorite album is Walkin In Faith so Jerome got My Vote I never got Rock, Stock, And Barrell, a mistake I will correct some day, but on Time Is All It Takes Drew Baca fits so will, as did Mazza that I honestly thought it was the same vocalist.

Dennis also sang in the Cover me introduction on Rock, Stock and Barrell.

And Ken Tamplin sang in the demo as well, just after Andy Lyon left the band, if I am not mistaken.

Rob Rock hands down.

I LOVE Cliffy's remaster of the s/t debut. He did a great job with this one. The remaster was supposed to be for the Intense Millennium release, which as we all know, never happened.

How come no one else picked up the baton on this one and ran with it?  Namely, Roxx or Retroactive?

I don't think Dennis sounded that bad on the songs from Time Is All It Takes...he usually lets Baca take over on the parts that required more range, namely the choruses (i.e. Carry Me).

I've wondered if that was him singing the first verse of "All I Can Do" but I'm thinking its Mazza most likely.

Doing a bit of searching about Jerome Mazza.

http://www.christianmusicarchive.com/artist/jerome-mazza has this tidbit.

Where are they Now:
Hello, Jerome Mazza here.  I was the lead singer for the band Angelica for the Walking In Faith album and featured on the 1993 Angelica Greatest Hits.
I spent about a decade in Los Angeles doing everything from album projects to commercials to movie songtracks and songwriting.
After my stay in L.A. I returned back to my home in Florida and started a business involving commercial loan lending.  I am now a private investor.
I'm still jamming and singing in Florida and am available for the right studio project.

And I found this.

bjorn again, I did a little Googling of my own and discovered that the song in the video was written by John & Dino Elefante.  I thought it had their style on it.  I wonder if John is doing a new album and this might be one of the tracks......

That song "that's why God made the moon"  was on John Elefante's album "windows from heaven" from 1995. That's awesome to hear this version.

Re: Angelica - Favorite vocalist

I don't think he has released an album. It is probably just a song he sang to promote his work.
What impresses me mostly is that the most relevant thing he has done in music industry was singing on a single Angelica album.

By the way, finally Rob Rock is leading this poll. No offense, all the singers are great (but Andy Lyon), but the only singer who can compete with Rob Rock is Ken Tamplin, undoubtedly.
Regarding Andy Lyon, I could see why Ken Tamplin (s/t album producer) pushed him so hard that made him give up of singing for Angelica as soon as I heard the demos with him on vocals.

Are any of the Andy Lyon demos online. I'm curious.

As far as Jerome goes, yeah I think that's just a promo for his work. There are two YouTube listings for that video. The one that I posted, and another one which if you read the comments section there is a comment saying that the person who posted it is Jerome's wife. Smile

He's still got a good voice IMO. He doesn't have quite the same range as John Elefante on that track, but that's probably an unfair comparison. Wonder if he could be hooked back into doing some Christian metal. Very Happy

i have the Angelica demos with Andy Lyon. PM me and i'll send them to you. I remastered them too.

I remember asking Dennis about Andy and he said that when Ken Tamplin wanted to go with another singer, Andy went home and he never saw or talk to him again.

I shall warn you that you shouldn't have great expectations about Andy Lyon. I listen to it once or twice and realized that didn't wprth to keep it in my computer.

Listening to more of the Andy Lyon. He just doesn't have the range, or if I hear correctly the ability to hold notes for very long. Maybe he needs Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy... oh wait, he had that already. Laughing

Totally agree on Mazza, I was terribly disappointed that he wasn't on the next album Sad  Is there any info out there about him? He was really good.

Rob Rock is a fine vocalist, but I also agree he didn't fit as well.

Then Dennis much later on had Cynical Limit, which was obviously very different from Angelica.

Walking In Faith is one of my very favorite Metal albums, ever.

I listened to both Walking in Faith and Rock Stock and Barrel in a row. And yes, I noticed the difference between Mazza and Bacca. Mazza work was slightly better.

Consider that the quality of the band has decreased a bit in each album, the s/t is not only their best, but also one of the best hard rock albums I have ever heard. There are many remarkable songs in it such as "Are you Satisfied", "Danger Zone", "Will I ever learn" and "Take me".
