Petra Means...Metal?

Post by bodachi on Mon Apr 20, 2015 2:19 am

Petra has had numerous albums since 1974, starting with...country?  Then some Jesus music, then some good rock 'n' roll, starting with "Never Say Die" through "On Fire!".  Then they started mellowing out with "Beyond Belief" and finally turning soft rock/adult contemporary.

Then "Jekyll & Hyde".  I think that's their last all-new material studio album.

ONE "metal" album after 30 years makes Petra a metal band?

Please, discuss - civilly.  I am not attacking or criticizing Petra or their fans!  I love their tunes from "Never Say Die" through ""Beyond Belief" (except "Back to the Street" - nothing on that album appealed to me).

I wouldn't call Petra a metal band - but they are close to it. Greg Volz referred them as hard rock. They had a few hard rock albums or parts of them were hard rock - More Power to Ya, Back to The Street to No Doubt, and Jekyll and Hyde. The funny thing is parts of their albums were heavier or the same than bands they called glam/hair metal like Holy Soldier, Guardian, Warrant, White Lion, Def Leppard and Warrant.

Neither would I.  I would consider some albums hard rock, like the fantastic "This Means War!" (Petra's ubiquitous keyboards notwithstanding).

This thread is primarily for those folks who do consider them metal.

Remember, I'm just ASKING, not accusing or picking a fight!

I have never seen anyplace where they are listed as metal and I have never met anyone who thinks they are.

What even brought this on?

Do you know people who do think they are metal?

Umm...

YOU, for one!  In your reply to Gipperman's "Top Ten Christian Metal Bands" topic:

NoOneIsHere wrote:Stryper   (been a fan since '84. 1st place and well above the rest of the pack)
Bloodgood

Barren Cross
Whitecross
X-Sinner
Rob Rock / Impellitteri
Saint  (Josh Kramer era only)...

Maybe you were referring to Petra when you also said:

Of course. As I CLEARLY stated, a couple of them on my list aren't metal.....

So no, I never said they were metal.

Ah, I see.  You weren't specific enough.

But there are some other folks...

In fact, Petra is the only band on that list you can not find any ties to metal at all.

Resurrection Band - Well, bands like Steppenwolf are the godfathers of Heavy Metal....I consider a lot of RB's early stuff to be very Steppenwolf like.

LNJ - They have had a lot of singers and musicians from metal bands play on their albums..

Petra - can't think of ANY ties to metal

Though you could REALLY stretch it and say that because Divine Right's Kevin Brandow played with them later on, that it is a tie to metal...

But Kevin's style was drastically different with Petra than it was with DR, and by the time KB played in Petra, Petra was hardly even rock anymore..   Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Petra toyed with metal, but never really crossed the line in terms of being all-out head-banging metal.  Hard rock, sure.  But metal?  No.

The closest they came was probably on three albums:

On Fire! has a touch of Def Leppard in it - meaning good Def Leppard, not Hysteria Def Leppard.

Unseen Power was a pretty solid heavy rock album that probably has more connections to metal bands than I'd like to admit.

Jekyll and Hyde was really heavy, and I had hopes that they would release an actual follow-up instead of "ending" it (and then coming back 5-6 more times).

This same discussion can be had with any of the early Christian rock bands. Bands like Rez and Jerusalem, even Daniel Band morphed into heavier bands as metal became more popular.

I think you would have to go back to the roots of metal to classify some of Petra's work.  Aerosmith was considered metal by the magazines and fans back in the 70's.  Hit Parader frequently featured Bon Jovi.  Had Rez Band or Petra been secular artists with the following they had, then Hit Parader and several other metal mags would have branded them the same thing.  That's good enough for me.

You cannot use the definition of what metal is today to describe music in the past.  You have to start with those foundations.

But, since there will always be someone who wants to classify every genre, I will just put Petra and Rez into the classifications of really good stuff.  I don't need a definition as most people I know don't have a clue who either of them are.

I'd be curious to know what their self-titled from 1974 would have been considered back in the day.

I considered them a pop band until On Fire.

Two words: Lucas McGraw.

I would have classified it as southern rock, kinda like The Eagles, pre-Hotel California.

This Means War and On Fire is as close as they ever came to Metal.  Even that wasn't 100% Metal like Tourniquet or Mortification.

I still say that Deflector song on the On Fire CD is the heaviest song they ever made.

There were bands much lighter than Petra being marketed as "metal" back in the day anyway. Heck, i saw a review where Shout or all bands were being compared to Ratt.  Uhh,,no.

I saw Petra three times; twice with Greg X Volz and once with John Schlitt. I got to go back stage and meet the the band and take pictures of all the band. I would say that they were heavier live by far, but I would not say that they were metal. They did have plenty of power chords though, which may count for being metal like. The Beat The System Tour was epic. It was like what you could call Power Prog, with metal over tones.

Early Petra has a lot of Kiss influence particularly in the guitar sound at least I can hear it for sure as I have listen to both bands many times and most albums etc. I would def say that though more rock than anything they do have that early metal sound happening that progresses into metal and then of course the mid to late eighties boarding on heavy rock just sitting under the metal radar but not far off it. In saying that I would not consider them a heavy metal band I would call them a melodic hard/heavy rock band for the most part.
