Top 5 metal/hard rock solos in songs
....this may change 5 minutes from now....but...( and I'm gonna cheat by making some ties )
1 ) Randy Rhoads - I don't know, crazy train, Mr crowely
2 ) Vivian Campbell - rainbow in the dark, last in line
3 ) Eddie VH - ice cream man, and ( awe, too many to mention )
4 ) Angus Young - too many to mention
5 ) Yngwie Malmsteen - I'll see the light tonight
I picked them not so much on purely technical ability ( that's certainly there of course ), but on feeling as well. And like I said, this will probably change.

Re: Top 5 metal/hard rock solos in songs
1: Larry Farkas- The solo from Can't Get Out on the Once Dead album
2: Herman Li & Sam Totman- Fury of The Storm by Dragon Force
3: Marty Friedman- Hangar 18 by Megadeth
4: Tourniquet- Healing Waters Of The Tigris (Not sure if this was Marty Friedman or not, but it sounds like it)
5: Power Quest- Diamond Sky
I picked mine based on my personal taste/feeling. That first one always gets my head banging like nothing else.

It's hard for me to judge only the guitar solo. Here are songs I love that the solo is at least one of the best parts.
Judas Priest - "Beyond the Realms of Death" (you get two here!)
UFO - "Love to Love"
Metallica - "One"
Deep Purple - "Highway Star"
Procol Harum - "In Held Twas In I: Grande Finale" (if you're a fan of Roger Waters, this must have been his inspiration)

Awhile back I created a 101 greatest guitar solos and most of them are hard rock/metal:

I thought I was the only guy in the universe who bagged on the "Der Fuhrer" solo! I must've mentioned it here years ago and you took my lead.

I've always thought that Flotsam guitar solos were pretty sloppy. That intro for the song mentioned was a perfect example of that.

Yeah, I probably heard you mention it on the old boards.
I should've included "Highway Star" it is a land mark solo.

Here's a great solo that nobody really talks about:
I left off "Freebird" on my 101 list.
