Mass
I picked up "New Birth" a while back, was not impressed...but I've been listening to some clips from "Sea of Black" and find them to be quite impressive!

Re: Mass
I like MASS, and they were really cool guys to hang out with at Skull Fest two years ago.
I think Sea Of Black is very good...

Re: Mass
Their early material sounds like generic hair/glam, where as this has some teeth to it...

I like this album. I like it a lot!
Re: Mass
I am also a big fan of Sea of Black, even tough there are many slow songs on it. However, New Birth is their best release ever. I am surprised you didn't like it. Also, the Unchained EP is highly recommended.
Lets keep an eye out for this band as they are recording a new album.

Re: Mass
"New Birth" is just too dated for me, too cheesy glam/hair metal, not my thing...

Re: Mass
I agree and I like me some hair metal. But I like most of Mass's stuff. Sea of Black is solid - same with Crack of Dawn. Looking forward to new music from them.Candlemass wrote:"New Birth" is just too dated for me, too cheesy glam/hair metal, not my thing...

Re: Mass
Just sounds like a different band on "Sea of Black" from "New Birth", different direction for sure!

Re: Mass
I enjoy their stuff, but REALLY enjoy "Voices in the Night"...my favorite of theirs by a wide margin. Perhaps it has something to do with the Stryper influence, as Michael Sweet produced that one and he and Oz Fox played a little on it, but they songs are really well done.

This is their chessiest álbum, for sure. I kind of like it, but it is my least favorite álbum by them. I had to listen to it a lot of times to get into it.

They certainly have evolved a lot as time passed by. I see Sea of Black as a very solid release.

Re: Mass
If you're more of a fan of the hair metal scene, I could see folks liking the older material better, but other than a handful of lp's, I am not. Stryper was a lot heavier than most hair metal bands from back in the day, if not the heaviest...

Re: Mass
I think their Take You Home EP is pretty heavy and has some good riffs.

The problem w/Mass is that they have no Candle...

Re: Mass
You should check out their 1982 album "Fighter". It was produced by Tom Allom (who worked with Judas Priest and some other bands) and KICKS!!!
A few of the songs were rerecorded for "new birth", but the versions on "fighter" are much less commercial.
I couldn't find any youtube clips, but you can listen to samples on amazon.com

I like their 80s stuff, mainly New Birth and Take You Home. But then, I'm a sucker for 80s glam/hair metal, dated or not.

Nice! Guess I'm in the minority here, but that's cool. Love the sound of this album!
