I appreciate your continual updates to the thread.  As far as the releases, personally I'm not looking for them to be exciting, as in big-name bands or anything like that.  I'm mostly looking for quality & interesting music and it doesn't matter to me if the band has 3 listeners or 3,000,000.  

I do try to spot-check each band offered to see what they sound like.  If I find something interesting and worth the time and energy, my next hurdle is dealing with the band's worldview/lyrics/image/etc.  If it's just a lot of "666" or "We Hate Everyone And Want To Kill Them" stuff then I generally stay away - mainly because I'm hoping to find something more artful and inspired instead of tired clichés and/or just expressions of pure emotion.   I also have to figure out how much of my own worldview I should be inserting and how to approach bands whose music I might like, but whose worldview I might be utterly opposed to.

It's tricky and I'm still trying to find a balance.
