Any major musical taste shifts 2017?

Post by ImagoDei on Mon Dec 11, 2017 4:28 pm

Just curious to see if anyone had any big musical taste changes within the last year. For me, I’ve taken quite a liking to power metal. I have dabbled in it in the past, but this year it really grew on me, and I picked up way more power metal albums as favorites and tended to not listen as much to black and death metal. I think that what I appreciate about it is a typically positive spirit to the music and lyrics, and incredible songwriting and musicianship. Bands of particular interest to me have been

Freedom Call
Firewind
Hammerfall
Elvenking
Edguy
Cyhra
Seven Kingdoms
Orden Ogen
Tad Morose

If you want the real good stuff, just let me know Very Happy

I didn't really shift a lot this year, since my favourite kinds of music ((sympho) power metal, heavy metal, prog metal, prog rock, AOR) all have been there in some form for a few years now. Maybe I have been exploring the AOR area a bit more though.

Some good bands in that list. You might want check out Blind Guardian, start with the older stuff, and Helloween.

Thumbs up

As for taste shifts in 2017... Adorned Graves has gotten me into the thrash mood a bit more than before.  I've also found myself listening to more death metal such as Renascent and Melech this year.

Also, this year I've seen a big shift within myself towards specifically Christian music and less secular.  Many of the secular bands I used to listen to a lot just don't resonate with me as much these days.

Nah, nothing major.  I've grown to like Metallica (at least, older Metallica) more than I used to recently.  That's about it.

I don't know about that. I've seen him poo-poo some pretty good stuff and also extol the greatness of some disco metal. Andre, Kerrick may have given you the title, but I'm keeping an eye on you...   cyclops

Viking Metal has become an interest of mine. I love the atmosphere and melodies but I've yet to find any band's in that genre that don't sing like they are choking on a gallon of snot. Harsh vocals don't bother me I love it in band's like Cradle Of Filth or Saturnus but I would like to find a band in this genre that incorporates more melody in their singing style. Like the vocal style of Manowars singer with the music of Holy Blood or Entombed

Any suggestions?

Not any major genre shifts, to note of

But over this last summer I have expanded my taste of the 80's rock and hair metal that I only dabbled in before

Not that I have gone completely secular or anything lol

Just been realizing why people are into Maiden, Dio, G n R, Quiet Riot, and the like

I listen to it, but I have yet to buy an album, but I now understand why people are hugely into these classic secular bands

I have some favorites and will occasionally choose to jam some cheesy sing a long stuff

(Don't worry I haven't lost my touch on the metalcore Razz)

Hey! I like power metal! Not a ton of it, but my faves are Seventh Avenue, Sinbreed, Treasure Seeker, Dragonforce, and Twilightforce

Opeth
I’m not sure but maybe check out Tyr. Later Falkenbach might fit some. Perhaps Cruachan, Heidevolk, Otyg, later Manegarm

I, too, have dabbled more in the old 80's metal from the secular side this summer.  It's good, but I can't listen to it all the time.  I just don't feel comfortable with the lyrics a lot of the time.

As for my listening overall this year, some of my favorite albums had more of a rootsy sound with elements of blues, rock, black gospel, etc. thrown in.  I'd love to put together something more on this level or at least find more artists doing this.

What are some that you've found? I found Glen Kaiser this year but nothing else like that so far.

I try and only listen to the clean stuff, which is tough, but I can listen to quite a bit

I struggle with that a lot. My old attitude used to be they are going to hell for what they sing about and promote not me. But god that is so wrong to look at music like that and not to mention judging someone's destiny I don't even know.

I don't look at it as judging their destiny because I never thought of them as going to hell for what they were singing.  I just don't feel comfortable with the lyrical themes in many of the songs of the bands I once loved.  I have started Netflix series just to stop them due to the same types of content only more visual.
