Best and worst(Christian metal edition)
Inspired by UltraMagnus thread in the secular metal forum, same game but with Christian bands instead
To paraphrase Ultra. I will start by mentioning a band and their best and worst albums, then the following person also does their best and worst from that band and then adds a band of their choosing best and worst, then the next person does the same, and to make it longer and longer as we go along each successive person does every band before in order and then adds their own. Best/favorite, Worst/least favorite
I'll start.
MORTIFICATION
Best album- Scrolls of the megilloth/Post Momentary Affliction(tie)
Worst album- Triumph of mercy
Now the next person do your best/fave and worst/least fave from Mortification and then do another band of your choosing...and the next person follow do the same...
P.S. you can post more than once, just wait till at least a few other people have responded between your last response first

Re: Best and worst(Christian metal edition)
I do like The Return of the Black Death, but I think it's Antestor's weakest album. I also think The Forsaken is a little overrated and considered choosing that as the worst one. It was also a toss-up between Martyrium and Omen for the best one for me, but ultimately I picked Omen.Contrarian Deist wrote:Woh! I'm kinda surprised to see Antestor's Return... so low on so many lists too! I really dig it. I'd have a hard time picking a "worst" album since all of theirs are pretty good IMO, though I find myself listening to Omen probably the least.

Re: Best and worst(Christian metal edition)
I listened to much of all 4 Antestor albums over the weekend. I was considering changing the best one to Omens, but I'd say it's a toss-up between that one and The Forsaken. They both have their strong points and weak points. I still think Return of the Black Death is the weakest one though.

DELIVERANCE
I agree with Livnas picks.
LIVING SACRIFICE
Best- Inhabit/conceived in fire(tie, for different reasons)
Worst- Reborn(not a terrible album, but after Inhabit...to this metalcore all of a sudden was a shock and disappointment. And its not as good as their next couple metalcore albums afterwards which were much better as a result of perfecting that style)
(I'm only familiar w/their first 6 albums though)

To me, not only is it their best album, but its the only album of theirs that is ACTUALLY black metal. (whereas my theory would be, folks don't really like REAL black metal as much as they do death/black/doom hybrids, hence why they prefer the other Antestor albums.)

Catching up:
Stryper

Worst: Reborn
Deliverance
Best: Deliverance / Learn (tie)
Worst: Camelot In Smithereens
Living Sacrifice
Best - Living Sacrifice
Worst - The Hammering Process
Seventh Angel

I skipped Saint because I'm not familiar with all their albums...
New ones:
The Brave
Best: Battle Cries
Worst: Rise
Guardian
Best: Miracle Mile / First Watch (tie)
Worst: Buzz
...Again, regarding Antestor, all of their albums are good and I would not say any of them are "bad" in any way. They are not like some bands who clearly have a "bad" album or two. I just don't find "Return" as interesting as the others. Maybe I've just heard that sound and style so much already and because I came to hear that album late in the game, it just didn't engage me like the others. As far as preferring hybrids, I would not say that's true as a general rule but I certainly am open to them.

Re: Best and worst(Christian metal edition)
I've been considering Martyrium to be their first album, since it was recorded in 1994, and Return of the Black Death was recorded after and came out 1998. It is odd to me that they went from doom/death/black for that, then black metal for Return, then Det Tapte Liv, The Forsaken and Omen have death metal elements.
...then again, when I saw Antestor in 1999 at Cornerstone, they were heartbroken about how Cacophonous Records treated them. It made me wonder if they would switch gears musically to fit another label's genres, and it sure seems like it to me.

Oops, you are right, Martyrium originally came out in 1994, before Return. I edited my error.
Back in the day, I think it's fair to say that the 1st time many of us heard of the band was due to "Return."
So I always think of that as their debut. But it is notable how the styles changed so much between albums.

Yeah like Constantine said I don't think that Return is a bad album by any means...I just think I enjoy the other three more. (The Forsaken only barely more than Return though.) I think each album has a pretty distinct sound; the band evolved a lot over time. I really hope we'll get to hear another one from them...it's been close to a decade since Omen was first released.

Hope no one takes this wrong, but The Hammering Process is my favorite Living Sacrifice. The tribal drums really added another dimension to the music and made up for the one-dimensional vocals of Fitzhugh. There's some really fantastic, instense songs on here like Bloodwork, Flatline, Hand of the Dead, Perfect, and Hidden. It's got groove and that's what the other albums lacked. There's also some really brilliant guitar solo'ing by Rocky Gray that goes underappreciated. That being said I am not the biggest extreme metal fan around here and IMO there is too much of it. To the point where you say 'metal' people just think of some brutal metal song they heard and found it very alienating.
That's more like it. CIF sounds rather uninspired to me and the songs don't differentiate themselves. This was one of the last extreme albums I ever bought, since I thought 'why am I buying cds on a genre I enjoy less than trad metal and prog metal?' The well was dry for classic metal for a long time, so I invested into hardcore and death cds to fill the void but, by this time, real metal (classic) started to pick back up so that was when I decided my cash only goes to the genres and subgenres I thoroughly enjoy rather than keep up with the Joneses.stevegarveyfan wrote:

once again. Metal purists hate the Hammering.

Unless your talking about the lyrics, that's insane to me. Usually once people give ATL a chance it goes near the top of the list. Musically speaking it's a solid, focused piece of work. The ambition on the album really shows out and it probably broke the band to see their efforts go unrewarded to the fanbase. However, the super-poppy IGWT did them in as they would not be able to satisfy these new fans with a solid piece of rock. They should have never gone with the producer of IGWT since he just did all pop artists in his past.

Hey, no need to explain. You like what you like! I agree with you on the metal thing. I've gone through the same thing with people automatically thinking metalcore is metal (it's not) and traditional/classic metal is hard rock. It's annoying.

Re: Best and worst(Christian metal edition)
Metalcore IS *Metal*, its cross over, but its still *metal*. To say bands like Suicidal Tendencies(hard-core/ thrash cross over) and later heavier Metalcore like say Hatebreed...aren't *metal* is absurd. Its like those who claim deathcore isn't death metal or isnt metal at all, or the heavier nu-metal bands like say Mudvayne, etc, arenr *metal*, its an argument without a sound logical basis, it's emotional pseudo-elitist tripe.
I say this as one who doesn't even like most of it personally(some is ok. And certainly I love Suicidal of course), a traditional metalhead who would be classified in the trad metal elite Fandom.
As for classical metal and hard rock. Well, there are a few bands that fit both labels. Depends on the Era to some extent. In 70s heavy metal was what would be later called hard rock and classic rock...in some cases anyhow. There is overlap in some. Not all, but some.
And bands like say AC/DC and Van Halen and Scorpions are both hard rock and heavy rock(just bordering on metal in some songs/albums)
Its the same as when people,e say Slipknot was/is a *nu-metal* band(and therefore to be dismissed as not real metal). Again, with no rational argument based in logic or fact, just poser hunting pseudo elitist b.s.
Anyways, got off topic a bit there. Sorry.
Metalcore IS a valid form of *metal*
I don't like much of it or listen to much of it, though some is OK or good IMO, but I still acknowledge....it IS a form of *metal*.
Oh and lastly, though I'm partial to Inhabit(living sacs DM years)...I thought Hammering Process was a pretty good album, though I liked Concievec in fire a bit more even.
I think on their first 3 or 4 albums Living Sacrifice were experimenting trying to find themselves and copying others without having any originaliyu(or much Anyhow)...to their credit I think they really found their sound around reborn and perfected it on hammering and conceived, and they were one of the earliest bands to help initiate that sound or subgenre(not THE first/earliest, but among the first/earliest)....which helped spearhead a particular sound
I didn't care much for reborn, but the following two albums were pretty good.

Not elitist at all. I'm talking about people who think that metalcore IS traditional metal when it's not.
