Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal? Empty Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal?

Post by ImagoDei Mon Apr 10, 2017 9:38 pm

Im a new dad and one of the things that my wife and I are beginning to learn is that our daughter seems to love music. That's becoming one of our main go to things after the first tier priorities have been addressed-food, diaper and physically loving on her.  Next in line is music. She seems to love hip hop (I play Christian for her), EDM, and stuff like Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash which I also sing to her. However, with metal, I am a bit hesitant to introduce so far, and wondered if I should just let her discover it on her own later on if she so chooses. The reason being, I'd rather her not get into bands like Cannibal Corpse and other bands with similar or satanic content. I realize that secular rap can have a pretty dark and perverted side too, so how do you go about pointing your kids in the right direction without also developing an affinity for anything  in a genre and winding up with the entire Dark Funeral discography in her collection and then possibly influenced by it?

Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal? Empty Re: Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal?

OK, I'm not a parent (yet, I hope), but I am a son. When I was 15 or so, I really got into Rammstein, a band that had some serious propaganda against it at my school for being satanic (which it is not). My father loathes about everything that's modern, so I kind of ignored him on that. My mother handled me very well in this regard though. As with violent computer games, she said that she was allright with it, because she trusted me to tell the difference between what's real and what's not. Unconsciously, I took that trust with me because this separating the entertainment (music/games/movies) from reality was kind of a starting point I guess. So I'd say that 1) you should raise your child right and 2) trust your child accordingly. So even when your daughter might end up liking Dark Funeral, it's not necessarily the worst thing in the world Wink

Of course your child isn't 15, but somehow I never have the idea that children should be protected from metal in general. Might be due to the fact that I'm a huge power metal fan, and I think that subgenre goes a little better with children than death metal. And even then I wouldn't make a problem out of it (not that I'm playing death metal at home, that stuff is horrible).

Just some thoughts, hopefully other people have more useful things to say Wink

Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal? Empty Re: Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal?

I don't love only metal, so I may not be the person to answer your question, but, I am a father of 8, so I do have some experience in the matter.

Also, having grown up in a home that thought Petra was of the devil, I had an uphill battle with music.

I now love metal, rock, electronic, classical, hymns, a fair amount of hip-hop, and a little bit of Latin.

I always hoped my children would enjoy the more extreme forms of music, and part of that was my own rebellious nature creeping in from my teenage years when I rebelled against my parents with music. However, I put music on the shelf, literally, for about 10 years while I pastored some churches and that was during the growing up years of my 4 oldest. So, I've only picked metal and some other music back up in the last 5 years.

My children have turned out to like what they like.

My oldest daughter, 19, loves Plumb, EDM (including dubstep) and 80s pop/rock.
My son, 17, likes classical and stuff like Lindsey Stirling. He owns an electric guitar and amp and he practices once in awhile.
My next daughter, 15, likes Christian radio hits like Newsboys, Britt Nicole, and TobyMac.
My next daughter, 12, likes Wolves at the Gate and many forms of rock and metal. She owns and practices the ukulele sometimes
My next two daughters, 11 and 9, like the Christian radio hits like the 15 year old. One plays the harmonica and one plays an ocarina.
My next daughter, 7, likes rock like Whiteheart and Petra. We got her a drum set for Christmas and she's learning to play.
My next daughter, 3, likes whatever's on in the house, even my extreme metal.

So, the real point here, is that you can't guide your children's musical choices. In fact, I'll be bold and say that if your children all end up liking your music, perhaps they haven't been allowed enough free expression in their own lives.

The even more important point is that we raise our children to be Godly men and women who place right living above all of life's pleasures. Everything, including music and the arts, fall into their proper place when we learn to live in Christ.

Adam has it right as far as kids and musical choices.  I'm the less musically varied  parent in my house, everything I llisten to is rock or metal, although that ranges anywhere from 80's Aerosmith to Zombie Death Stench.  Mom, on the other hand listens to a lot of country and CCM, with a love for late 80's/early 90's variants of both.

My oldest son will be 21 in the fall.  He loves videogames, videogame related music, anime themes wtc.....but his favorite band?  Dokken.  I'd like to believe I played just as much a part in that as Nightmare on Elm Street III.....

Oldest daughter is 19, a fantastic acoustic guitar player, and church worship leader.  On any given day she can go from listening to a classical finger style arrangement of an old church hymn to Killswitch Engage.  There were a couple years in her early teens where she was a "show buddy" for Dagon gigs if they weren't playing a bar....

Next daughter, 17, has a GREAT voice, sometimes helps her sister with worship service....but primarily regales the house quite regularly with Disney songs.  Go figure.

The not quite 15 year old likes (much to my chagrin) the emo/Rock thing.  Her favorite band is 21 Pilots.  She likes her rock and roll a bit more "poppy" than dad does.  She's also picked up the ukulele at a pretty fast rate, and has a drum set i am working on finding decent space for.

The 12 year old is another Disney fanatic.

The other 3 haven't really expressed much of a preference YET. The 8 year old boy pretty much listens to anything dad or big brother play, he likes anything with even a REMOTE resemblance o the OG Power Rangers theme song, the younger girls (6 and 3) are all about the Disney stuff just like their bigger sisters.  The 3 year old has a tiny toddler size drum set she beats on, but she's showin me she's got a sense of rhythm too......

Being the youngest of 5 myself I grew up listening to what my older brothers did. Zeppelin, Bad Company, Hendrix, Styx, Journey, Beatles and classic rock stuff. I was a teen in the 80's so I listened to metal at that time.

As for my kids, NO they do not listen to anything that I like except The Beatles.

to answer the OP question, yes. it really was unbeknownst to me that my son would be a metal nut and I am convinced that this played a part in why he likes it so much.

when he was in the womb (1996) I put my headphones on mommas belly and played Vegeance, Tourniquet, Believer, etc and he is today a full on metalhead...

he likes black metal best (my least favorite metal form) and he has that metal or nothing attitude that I had at his age..

Like Adam said, 16 Wink. It gets a little crazy with the minor similarities between us:  glasses, bearded, he's 42 and I will be in May, both huge metalheads, 8 kids, we live ~ 60 miles apart......and somehow we both ended up at CMR.

Thanks for all of your responses, I really appreciate them. My wife listens to a lot of EDM, so of course she did so while pregnant. It is interesting that they seem to pick that stuff up that early on and develop preferences. I like the point given that if they only like what we like, then hey probably have been not exposed enough and allowed to explore. I also appreciate the reminder to raise her in a Godly way and everything else falls behind that. And for the guys with 8 kid, how do you keep up with all of them!?

Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal? Empty Re: Did you turn your kid(S) onto metal?

Post by Hardcore Christian Tue Apr 11, 2017 9:39 pm

I think I have told my metal story a lot, on here, sorry if I have over told it

Actually my mom and dad both listen to metal still today and were like you all, in that they grew up in the 80s listening to metal

My Dad was allowed to listen to anything (he wasnt saved till he met my mom around 18)
He previously owned everything from Venom and Slayer to Kiss
Hundreds of vinyl!
When he got saved he traded it all away to a friend of his for a car, that he never drove once before it broke down

My mom was raised in a Christian home, and was taught that just about anything with electric guitar was evil

When she learned about Petra and Stryper at her youth group she was blown away

Anyway they followed along closely with what was big at the time from Stryper and Petra to Deliverance and Tourniquet to P.O.D. and Underoath, and my dad is still majorly into the modern scene
My mom, not so much, she has a few bands she loves like Red and Demon Hunter, but other than that she listen to CCM and thats about it

Now we get to me, I originally just listened to whatever my parents did and thought it was so cool!

Eventually got a few of my own albums that I played to death around 8 years old (The Showdown's Temptation Come My Way and Blessed By A Broken Heart's Pedal To The Metal) if it wasn't for those 2 albums, I never would have discovered the entire "realm" of pre-2005 music!

Suddenly I was interested in what my parents had stored away in the closet, and discovered thrash through Ultimatum's Puppet Of Destruction and Mortification's Primitive Rhythm Machine and then discovered glam through Whitecross's In The Kingdom and Angelica's Walkin In Faith

Anyway the rest is history, I am into anything from Petra to Impending Doom, Stryper to Fit For A King

Let me just say, that my dad still says how my musical taste blows his mind!

He never imagined I'd go back and listen to what he did as a kid, and then get into even the more extreme bands like Horde, Frost Like Ashes, etc.

Right now my daughter's favorite bands are Amaranthe and Pentatonix. She's seven.

She's the type that will listen to one single thing over and over again until you want to blow your brains out. Though her choices aren't bad. Especially now that we're over the Frozen Soundtrack phase.

Lucky you.  Just remember that the Moana soundtrack is waiting in the wings.
