Moving your music collection...

Post by Soldier777 on Sun Apr 09, 2017 11:56 pm

I moved my 300 or so CDs, several more videos/DVDs/Blurays, few cassettes and my wife's CD and DVD collection from one par of my rec room to another. Overall there was about 400 items. It took me awhile. For those of you who have a larger collection if you were to move it all to another place in your house, would it involve careful planning and a lot of work? Would you allow your wife and kids to help out or would you do it yourself?

I used to have a large physical collection and I also used to move a lot. It was always tedious because I kept everything in alphabetical order and would take several boxes plus the shelving for it. I never thought I would do this, but before a long distance move, I got rid of all of it and went 100% digital and haven't looked back.

Oh man I dont even know what Im going to do! Shocked

Next year when I move out and down to college, I am going to be moving in with my dad and his family

(I currently live with my mom)

I already have a room there but I'm definitely gonna have to make space somewhere!
I have about the same size collection as you, 300 or so CDs, about 70 cassettes and a few DVD's, and numerous signed items santa

When I do move out its gonna be mostly CDs that come with me, I dont even wanna imagine how many boxes its gonna take, hopefully I can find some bigger ones, I also hope none get damaged in transport pale

I am definitely gonna carry those boxes myself out to the car, and if I end up dropping one, I'll never forgive myself  No

Now I'm all worried about moving! Thanks dude Laughing

I have several hundreds of CDs. Moving is quite the operation indeed; those things are so heavy!
But some autistic part of me (my dad and one brother have a form of autism, can be contagious sometimes Razz ) really loves putting those things in order. So moving is not that much of a problem, I love getting those things in order.

No plans on moving any of it, ever. Over 400 LP's (which are very  heavy) and probably 4,000 - 5,000 CD's. Countless DVD's, most of the VHS tapes are gone. And if I had to move them it would probably just be me doing it. I never trade or sell CD's, I have the first one I bought back in 1986. About 4 years ago I did trade in maybe 20-30 for in store credit and used them to buy record albums.

I'm meticulous about my music collection: alphabetical by artist then chronological for each artist.  When I moved a lot I got away from that and the collection became a jumble.  Now that I'm stable they're all on shelving and if I were to move it, it would be only me and very carefully.

I've always been a stickler for proper organization, so it took some planning to move my collection in 2014.  A few crates of vinyl were no big deal, but the 300-400 DVDs & 3000+ CDs took some planning and a lot of numbered cartons.  No, I would never trust the organization/packing/unpacking to anyone else.

These days I thin out my collection by the same amount I acquire!

I remember when I moved to my current location nearly 4 years ago. With 400 CD's the moving felt quite challenging.

Last time I checked I had maybe 750 CD's (It may be 800 now, I've lost track Smile ), 30 cassettes and 50-60 vinyls. And maybe 40 CD's are waiting for a shelf space Smile . When I get a new, bigger shelf, I'm gonna put all my CD's in alphabetical order. It's gonna take a lot of work, but it's worth it. If I'm gonna move to another apartment, I'll pack my music collection myself. Not because I don't trust others, but to make sure everything goes the way I want.

Have their been that many albums released? Like in the world? Razz

For real what genres do you listen to?
Are there some albums that you have never played?
How much time do you have to listen to music?
How often do you listen to a single album?

Only problem with me, even with only about 400 albums total, I barely find time to play more than maybe 8 albums, that will go through my rotation

When Im into an artist or album, it dominates my player, for a few weeks and then its gone, I may come back a few months or years later, there are still some albums on my I-Tunes I have never listened too

For example Ive currently been playing a lot of:
Holy Soldier
mychildren mybride
Seventh Avenue
Gwen Stacy

Thats it

Have their been that many albums released? Like in the world? Razz LOL, it seems like a lot because it is. But I assure you, 32K albums is just a drop in the bucket compared to 100's of 1000's (maybe millions?) that have been made over the years. But as far as Christian releases not that many relatively speaking.

For real what genres do you listen to? I mostly listen to Christian rock and Christian metal but my collection also includes secular rock and metal, Parodies, Covers, Christmas, Comedy, sound effects, soundtracks, some classical, some swooners and some Country.
Are there some albums that you have never played? Yes. Some albums were given to me by good intentioned friends, some albums to complete a discography, etc.

How much time do you have to listen to music? Not every day. But every time I'm in the car by myself. Or using headphones in the house.
How often do you listen to a single album? Once usually but again if I liked it or if I am doing a review. I just don't listen to the same over and over unless I am trying to memorize the lyrics. I will definitely not over listen to my favorites, they sound so sweet as I revisit them months, years later. Everyone is different, this is how I roll (and rock).

I have nearly 6,000 CDs and when we moved, they took up almost 1/4 of the UHaul truck. We downsized our house because we are now empty nesters and don't have as much room here. So I got rid of all of the jewel cases and bought the cloth CD holders and some cases made for holding CDs. I have them in 20 of those boxes including four for the album covers and back covers.

I know I was just kidding but man, my collection seems like nothing! 32k albums, I cant even imagine

Compared to most people 300 albums is a lot

And yes! very true

everyone has their own way of listening to music

IF my collection is being moved, I want it to be me, not someone else. I'm too picky about it. My physical collection hasn't grown much since I went digital about four years ago. I've got around 700 cds and my digital collection is about the same. It amazes me just how much music can actually be carried in my pocket.

I now have enough CD racks to be able to stuff them into their racks (gently of course) and move them as is. I'm far from having a permanent settlement; for the next few years I'll probably be in apartments.

I just bought a new computer and moving my music collection has been a royal pain.  I hope oldschooldoom never has to go through this.

I've counted my collection wrong at some point. This is the current state:

670 CD's

71 LP's

67 cassettes

= overall 808 items

Re: Moving your music collection...

Post by Mysterious Gamer Dude on Wed May 31, 2017 5:54 pm

Up until about six months ago all of my music collection has been digital. Just recently is when I started building up my physical collection. Not that many if you only count my physical collection. But if you include all of it let me tell you (Instead of moving from a location it's several devices for me. Not moving just yet) it can be a pain to get all that music onto both my PC, phone (iPhone at that), USB stick, and so on. With the digital music it isn't so hard, moslty a matter of copy and pasting. But those CDs, it's a process of ripping the CD, manually updating the info, converting the audio to MP3 (That way my iPhone recognizes the file. And that way my PS4 and PS3 recognizes the file on my USB stick), then copying them all to band-specific folders, then album/EP/Singles specific folders. Then copy all those folders to each device, USB, etc. Except for the iPhone, I have to use a program that bypasses that iTunes mess cos' iTunes annoyes me with their process. And if I make any typos (Like I tend to do) I can't stand it I have to fix them before moving on to anything else.

But even with the digital library my collection is much smaller in comparison to you guys.

When we last moved I had all my CD's in narrow floor to ceiling CD racks.  So I just shrink-wrapped each rack and them carried them on to the lorry.  Saved me loads of time and effort.

Kids, maybe. Wife? Absolutely not! Everything would be out of order and backwards, and possibly even upside down. Worse: her music would be mixed in with mine!  face palm

I'm actually right now working on and copying my digital music collection from my computer to my Google Play account. It's a slow thing to do,because of 8444 files Very Happy . I'm doing it just for the traveling. When I'm done with this, it's much more easier to get some music to listen to when I'm going for a trip. And Google music doesn't have some of the albums that I own.

But I'm not gonna stop buying albums in physical form. That's not gonna happen as long as there is a chance to buy physical copies. I wanna have something that I can hold in my hands Very Happy
